Well-established bands also found themselves along for the ride, including AFI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After gaining traction and critical acclaim with <em>Sing the Sorrow<\/em>, AFI released their seventh album, <em>Decemberunderground<\/em>, in 2006, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/afi\/miss-murder\">&#8220;Miss Murder&#8221;<\/a> as its lead single. It became their first Top 40 hit and remains their commercially successful single to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AFI - Miss Murder (Official Music Video) (Long Version)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YU4hhNKsPog?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Miss Murder&#8221; and Suicide<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AFI, and in particular frontman and lyricist Davey Havok, typically avoids saying too much about their songs&#8217; meanings, preferring fans to interpret them for themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t necessarily need for people to understand specifically what it means,&#8221; Havok said in an interview with <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. &#8220;If they want to take something from it and use it in a personal way, I think that&#8217;s great. I wouldn\u2019t want to risk destroying that just so someone can get a better understanding of me personally.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Havok has provided some insight into &#8220;Miss Murder,&#8221; especially its opening lines and chorus, which he intended to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Hey, Miss Murder, can I<br>Hey, Miss Murder, can I<br>Make beauty stay if I take my life?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;[The song] poses the gentle question, &#8216;Should I just kill myself?&#8217; Probably,&#8221; Havok said in a 2025 appearance on the <em>HardLore<\/em> podcast. &#8220;&#8216;And if I don&#8217;t, is s&#8211;t just gonna get worse?'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first verse goes on to describe a man who is adored by those around him, who are left wondering why he abandoned them, perhaps by committing suicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>With just a look, they shook<br>And heavens bowed before him<br>Simply a look can break your heart<br>The stars that pierce the sky<br>He left them all behind<br>We&#8217;re left to wonder why<br>He left us all behind<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second verse reiterates the first&#8217;s themes of abandonment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Dreams of his crash won&#8217;t pass<br>Oh, how they all adored him<br>Beauty will last when spiraled down<br>The stars that mystify<br>He left them all behind<br>And how his children cried<br>&#8220;He left us all behind&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some fan interpretations view the song as Havok&#8217;s personal struggle with fame, with Miss Murder functioning as a sort of grim reaper he will willingly surrender to if she agrees to immortalize his persona. Other fan interpretations include Satan&#8217;s fall from grace or Jesus abandoning humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Miss Murder&#8221; and AFI&#8217;s Legacy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Havok doesn&#8217;t dislike &#8220;Miss Murder,&#8221; he does feel it&#8217;s not the band&#8217;s best work and didn&#8217;t want to include it on the album, and he fights to leave it off the band&#8217;s set lists when they play live. He&#8217;s also disappointed it&#8217;s the song they&#8217;re most known for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt breaks my heart that Miss Murder will always represent us, and that I will die and someone will look up AFI and &#8216;Miss Murder&#8217; is what they\u2019re gonna find,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/bands-artists\/interviews\/it-breaks-my-heart-that-miss-murder-will-always-represent-us-afis-davey-havok-on-selling-out-his-surprise-love-for-glam-metal-and-why-the-band-werent-part-of-2000s-emo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he said in an interview with <em>Metal Hammer<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;I don\u2019t dislike Miss Murder, it\u2019s a pretty good song! But never, even when we wrote it, did I think that it was the greatest song.
