However, the lyrics show a bitterness many in a broken relationship can relate to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He describes banal routines and how they dull one\u2019s spirit. Curtis, touring with Joy Division, was both physically and emotionally detached from his wife. They were drifting apart, and distance wasn\u2019t helping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>When routine bites hard and ambitions are low,<br>And resentment rides high, but emotions won\u2019t grow.<br>And we\u2019re changing our ways, taking different roads<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love becomes a cudgel. Now it\u2019s missing, creating an emotional abyss between them. Still, the heart\u2019s impulses can work in both directions\u2014as either a connection or a revolt. (The \u201cagain\u201d here is doing a lot of work.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Then love, love will tear us apart again.<br>Love, love will tear us apart again<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Intimacy is gone. Perhaps he\u2019s trying to rekindle romance, yet it\u2019s awkward. But the familiarity of a long history together and a young daughter won\u2019t be enough to save the marriage, or Curtis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Why is the bedroom so cold? You\u2019ve turned away on your side,<br>Is my timing that flawed? Our respect runs so dry.<br>Yet there\u2019s still this appeal that we\u2019ve kept through our lives<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Disorder<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His life was spiraling out of control. The pressure of Joy Division\u2019s rising fame, his epilepsy, a guilt-ridden affair, and his crumbling marriage felt insurmountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1980, Curtis took his own life on the eve of the band\u2019s first North American tour. And though his lyrics are often abstractly observational, it\u2019s not hard, in hindsight, to draw straight lines to his own experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You cry out in your sleep, all my failings exposed,<br>There\u2019s a taste in my mouth as desperation takes hold.<br>Just that something so good, just can\u2019t function no more<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curtis\u2019s bandmates, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris, regrouped and carried on as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/articles\/the-iconic-joy-division-beat-that-anchors-new-orders-age-of-consent\/\">New Order<\/a>.
