But on his latest LP, <em>The Singer In My Band<\/em>, Amos has consolidated his songwriting neatly into a concise 34-minute effort. It follows his 2024 breakout album, <em>Box For Buddy, Box For Star<\/em>, which follows hundreds of self-released songs on Bandcamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are unfamiliar with Amos\u2019s prolific songwriting, \u201cBilly Came Back\u201d is a good place to begin. It\u2019s the lead single from <em>The Singer In My Band<\/em>, and documents a legend\u2019s return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"This Is Lorelei - &quot;Billy Came Back&quot; (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LkvqdXBpQss?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Legend Returns<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amos sings about a local legend and karaoke singer named Billy. But Billy can smash lyrics without looking at the screen, like he was born with an instinct for instant song recall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Billy doesn\u2019t need to watch the screen,<br>\u2019Cause he knows most every word and what it means.<br>I always thought that Billy had the knack,<br>And I always thought that Billy might come back<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Billy left town for some reason, and there seems to be a darkness around this character. Amos remembers Billy; he remembers his bad decisions; and the kind of self-made luck that propels Billy to cover songs over a backing track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The last time I saw Billy was in 2022,<br>Yeah, the only things he ever did were things I wouldn\u2019t do.<br>And now he\u2019s showing up in cowboy boots with all the luck he needs,<br>He\u2019s got every song he\u2019ll ever wanna sing; you can hear him sing<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ordinary character in Amos\u2019s dusty tune remains an enigma. And for Amos, who delivers the song in a mono-voiced baritone like Courtney Taylor-Taylor of The Dandy Warhols crooning some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/the-dandy-warhols\/godless\">strange tale from urban bohemia<\/a>, Billy may represent the local dreamer who\u2019s coming to terms with falling short of the dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still a celebrity in some circles, might as well come back to where they know you best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Like he\u2019s singing from the bottom of a deep blue sea,<br>Yeah, my Billy\u2019s got a voice that sings for you and for me.<br>Billy\u2019s back, he\u2019s singing to the track,<br>Billy came back<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>We All Came Running Back<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the words on the karaoke screen concentrate Billy\u2019s mind far away from despair. He returns to the same place just to escape.
