Rather than simply get over it, he chooses to enclose it inside an emotional locker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once there, he can transport it or pull it out and revisit the past anytime he likes. But as the song unfolds, Gibbard realizes that harboring grief inside a mental closet isn\u2019t sustainable. Because grief is the proof of joy. And joy\u2019s absence will always be felt regardless of how it disintegrated or where it ultimately gets stored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>I Needed You Contained<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Death Cab for Cutie - &quot;I Built You A Tower (a)&quot; (Full Album Stream)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VtzZkBiB0RQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a painful separation, Gibbard stores his ex in the back of his mind. This is wrangling the chaos of a breakup and filing it away somewhere in the deep corners of his brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I built you a tower,<br>A tower in my mind.<br>A place that no one else,<br>No one else would ever find.<br>\u2019Cause I needed you,<br>I needed you contained.<br>You\u2019d run circles \u2019round,<br>Circles \u2019round my brain<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence is a suitable replacement for this person. But Gibbard knows that he\u2019s deluding himself. Quiet also comes with the volume of a dam breaking, and the pain rushes back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>At first the silence felt,<br>Felt like an old friend.<br>From whom I was estranged,<br>But finally made amends.<br>But into this void,<br>Into this empty space.<br>All my sleeping fears,<br>They began to race<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Compartmentalize Grief<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI Built You A Tower\u201d is Gibbard compartmentalizing grief.
