Because as you\u2019ll hear on the album\u2019s lead single \u201cOn Wires\u201d, the Canadian singer-songwriter knows exactly what she wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>World Is On Fire<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Carly Rae Jepsen - On Wires (Official Music Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_Xqexqiqkdk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jepsen uses a tightrope metaphor to describe the anxiety of meeting someone, liking them, and wondering who\u2019s making the first move here. It\u2019s risky business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The whole world is on fire, but we didn\u2019t notice,<br>I\u2019m walking on wires in the middle of it,<br>Standing in your, standing in your coat.<br>I think it\u2019s not fair what you\u2019re doing to me,<br>Stop dragging this out \u2019round the city, baby,<br>Dancing in your, dancing in your coat<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s clear what she wants. But does the other person feel the same?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I want to be more than friends for the week<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the chorus hits, Jepsen\u2019s voice floats inside the track\u2019s density, in a surreal blend of anxiety and bliss. She sustains the word \u201cyou\u201d as if she\u2019s falling from high above, from the aforementioned tightrope, but there\u2019s no safety net below to catch her if her feelings are unreciprocated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I want you\u2026<br>So what are we gonna do?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>I\u2019m Calling To You<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, Jepsen <a href=\"https:\/\/turnituprecords.co.uk\/products\/carly-ray-jepsen-day-and-night-limited-edition-indie-exclusive-translucent-forest-green-2-x-lp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cIt\u2019s about wanting someone so badly you can barely get through the motions of a night out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She can picture what it might be like, but a picture isn\u2019t enough. The image doesn\u2019t talk; it can\u2019t feel, and she cannot touch it. Come on, she\u2019s thinking. \u201cWanna walk me home?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The narrator stares at this person, hoping for a hint. It\u2019s the awkwardness of gazing at someone from across the room. Do they share the same urgency?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Gimme a look, gimme a sign,<br>You want a muse, you need a siren, I\u2019m calling to you.<br>Every sip, every sigh,<br>Hands on my hips, we\u2019re gonna fly, it\u2019s a beautiful thing<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Jepsen, \u201cOn Wires\u201d does away with the soft emotional volleys of flirting. This is a straight-up pursuit.
