But the date has more to do with how well it sings than with any significance. (And prioritizing feel over literal meaning became a recurring theme, as you\u2019ll hear in the chorus.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Do you remember,<br>The 21st night of September?<br>Love was changing the minds of pretenders,<br>While chasing the clouds away<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The couple here is in harmony with one another. There\u2019s no friction, just dancing and singing and deep funk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Our hearts were ringing,<br>In the key that our souls were singing.<br>As we danced in the night, remember,<br>How the stars stole the night away, oh, yeah<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, Earth, Wind &amp; Fire reach maximum bliss in the chorus, creating an anthem out of elated gibberish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Hey, hey, hey<br>Ba-dee-ya, say, do you remember?<br>Ba-dee-ya, dancing in September.<br>Ba-dee-ya, never was a cloudy day<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Happiest-Sounding Song in the World<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1978, White invited then-unknown songwriter Allee Willis to write with him in the studio. When she arrived, the band had already worked out what became the intro to \u201cSeptember\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd I just thought, \u2018Dear God, let this be what they want me to write!\u2019 \u2019Cause it was obviously the happiest-sounding song in the world,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/09\/19\/349621429\/the-song-that-never-ends-why-earth-wind-fires-september-sustains\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> NPR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>My thoughts are with you,<br>Holding hands with your heart to see you.<br>Only blue talk and love, remember,<br>How we knew love was here to stay<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guitarist Al McKay wrote the chord progression, and over the next month, White and Willis used starry imagery and simple words to portray the song\u2019s tender nostalgia\u2014though the writing session wasn\u2019t as effortless as the band\u2019s eternal groove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White\u2019s gibberish in the chorus bugged Willis.
