His spoof, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/weird-al-yankovic\/eat-it\">&#8220;Eat It&#8221;<\/a>, was released in 1984, just two years after Jackson&#8217;s release. Yankovic said it was all thanks to MTV, or as he referred to it, &#8220;video wallpaper.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Yankovic Credits MTV for the Success of \u2018Eat It\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;Weird Al&quot; Yankovic - &quot;Eat It&quot; (coverage take)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WBuszEbobq0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the interview, Yankovic discussed how Jackson&#8217;s &#8220;Beat It&#8221; was repeatedly played on MTV. At this time, MTV was still new. Many people were obsessed with it and had MTV displayed on their television screens often. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It was like video wallpaper. They just had it on in the house,&#8221; said Yankovic, &#8220;And people were familiar with every little detail of that music video. So it was very easy to parody because people were already familiar with the source material.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Yankovic, it was easy to craft a spoof of &#8220;Beat It&#8221; given its popularity and coverage on MTV. Since most knew the song, most could easily recognize Yankovic&#8217;s inspiration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yankovic typically chooses popular songs to create parodies for the same reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turning Popular Songs Into Silly Spoofs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yankovic creates silliness quite thoughtfully.
