But given punk\u2019s history, and especially the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/ramones\/i-wanna-be-your-boyfriend\">Ramones<\/a>\u2019 knack for borrowing candy-sweet melodies from 60s girl groups like The Shangri-Las, the epithet doesn\u2019t quite stick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time Blink-182 released its third studio album, <em>Enema Of The State<\/em>, pop-punk had replaced grunge in mainstream culture. Together with The Offspring, Green Day, and others, Blink-182 became a dominant force on MTV and rock radio. And on their 1999 hit \u201cAll The Small Things\u201d, the band proved they had perfected the art of pop-punk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"blink-182 - All The Small Things (Official Music Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9Ht5RZpzPqw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Carry Me Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With an eternally young and sneering voice, DeLonge delivers an ode to his then-girlfriend. To be clear, that\u2019s a compliment. It reminds me of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oxOjIj18I9E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Liam Gallagher\u2019s baggy snarl when he sings his brother\u2019s anthemic melodies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>All the small things,<br>True care, truth brings.<br>I\u2019ll take one lift,<br>Your ride, best trip.<br>Always, I know,<br>You\u2019ll be at my show.<br>Watching, waiting,<br>Commiserating.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a punk serenading the love of his life. And most bands would kill for a chorus this good. Yet this is only the pre-chorus, as Blink-182 often packed its songs with endless hooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Say it ain\u2019t so, I will not go,<br>Turn the lights off, carry me home.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the chorus, Mark Hoppus joins DeLonge in a \u201cna, na, na, na\u201d singalong that helped define Gen X punkish irony. On his bandmate, Hoppus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/how-blink-182-went-to-the-top-of-the-charts-by-keeping-their-minds-in-the-gutter-114039\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>, \u201cTom is totally, 100 percent faithful to his girlfriend. He\u2019s pretty straightforward: He hangs out with his girlfriend, and he believes in aliens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jerry Finn<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Producer Jerry Finn was tasked with corralling Blink-182\u2019s high-energy punk and goofy attitude. He became so crucial to the band that it often seemed like he was the fourth member alongside DeLonge, Hoppus, and drummer Travis Barker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, Finn helped some of the decade\u2019s biggest punk bands refine their sound. His impressive credits include blockbuster recordings by Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, Rancid, and The Offspring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Late night, come home,<br>Work sucks, I know.<br>She left me roses by the stairs,<br>Surprises let me know she cares<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll The Small Things\u201d also represented the end of an era. Soon, guitar bands would no longer dominate culture.
