Recorded in his Brooklyn apartment, the Canadian singer-songwriter attempts to overcome life\u2019s doldrums. And rather than wallow in apathy, he delivers a Shakespearean-minded pick-me-up jam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Salad Days\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Dm4x7NT58Ig?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rolling Through Life<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many give in to cynicism as they settle into the banality of everyday life. For DeMarco, once his music became popular, he found himself on the endless conveyor belt that is touring and releasing albums. Has he peaked in his 20s? Was he settling now? Even the word settle is a kind of resignation. So he needed a way out of this acquiescence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeMarco wrote the song as a self-wellness check. A soft-rock rage against pessimism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>As I\u2019m getting older, chip up on my shoulder,<br>Rolling through life, to roll over and die<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now he\u2019s missing old friends and coming to terms with adulthood. The easy days of lazing about are behind him. And DeMarco\u2019s signature wobbly guitar chords give the nostalgia its hazy soundtrack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Missing Hippie Jon, salad days are gone,<br>Remembering things just to tell \u2019em so long<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is tough love from DeMarco. But he\u2019s still young, and it\u2019s ridiculous to think your life is already over. Grow up and keep going, he sings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Oh, mama,<br>Acting like my life\u2019s already over.<br>Oh, dear,<br>Act your age and try another year<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Like Vegetables<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comparing the freshness of salad greens to the vigor of youth dates back to William Shakespeare and his romantic tragedy, <em>Antony and Cleopatra<\/em>. In the play, Cleopatra says of her past praise of Caesar:<br><br>\u201cMy salad days,<br>When I was green in judgment, cold in blood,<br>To say as I said then.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But instead of using the phrase to describe immaturity, DeMarco said the song is about having perspective and also <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/xoTdL32MjU8?si=XqIJe6-AL2FBQhYl&amp;t=217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a reminder to avoid being an \u201ca**hole.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, DeMarco was long ago anointed the king of indie slackerdom.
