The trio, J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph, survived the chaos long enough to come out the other side of it with a commercial breakthrough. But it nearly killed the band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Weirdness Flows Between Us<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dinosaur Jr - Freak Scene\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5eO6up9Gpv0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFreak Scene\u201d could be about any close friendship. But if you\u2019ve ever been in a band, then you\u2019ll understand the tension Mascis sings about here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Seen enough to eye you,<br>But I\u2019ve seen too much to try you.<br>It\u2019s always weirdness while you,<br>Dig it much too much to fry you.<br>The weirdness flows between us,<br>Anyone can tell to see us.<br>Freak scene just can\u2019t believe us,<br>Why can\u2019t it just be cool and free us?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Intra-band turmoil is baked into the equation of rock groups. It\u2019s unlike most professional arrangements where, in this case, three people spend the majority of their waking (and sleeping) hours together in incredibly close quarters. If you think your office is cramped, try cramming into a 15-passenger van with your co-workers, stinking, broke, and hauling loads of heavy gear in and out of venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>It\u2019s so f***ed I can\u2019t believe it,<br>If there\u2019s a way, I wish we\u2019d see it.<br>How it could work, just can\u2019t conceive it,<br>Oh, what a mess; it\u2019s just to leave it<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What a Mess<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mascis sounds like he\u2019s ready to give up. All communication has broken down, and he sees no way out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was probably about trying to deal with people or friends trying to communicate with me. It was kind of pointing out some weird relationship,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/bands-artists\/interviews\/dinosaur-jr-freak-scene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Sometimes I don\u2019t thrill you,<br>Sometimes I think I\u2019ll kill you.<br>Just don\u2019t let me f**k up, will you,<br>\u2019Cause when I need a friend, it\u2019s still you<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet, the commercial appeal of the song helped give Dinosaur Jr. a way forward. Their popularity continued to rise with subsequent releases as well as the rise of grunge in the early 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Mascis\u2019s creative control over the band didn\u2019t help matters either. But both the song and the album struck a chord. Sean Slade and Paul Q.
