And the group became one of the last underground 90s bands to become firmly rooted in the mainstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, if you only know \u201cCannonball\u201d, this list is a public service attempt to change that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cDivine Hammer\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Breeders - Divine Hammer (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tUiP5eyx3NM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though not as ubiquitous as \u201cCannonball\u201d, if you were around in the 90s, you likely know \u201cDivine Hammer\u201d. It also appears on <em>Last Splash<\/em> and finds Kim Deal in existential anguish. She\u2019s searching for the unreachable, unknowable, transcendent, <em>something<\/em>. She <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120626120104\/http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/song-stories\/divine-hammer-the-breeders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> in 1993, \u201cWhen I grew up and went to Sunday school, they said it was going to be really great \u2026 I [believed] everything everybody told me. And that\u2019s why I\u2019m so pissed off now.\u201d And don\u2019t forget to check out \u201cDivine Mascis\u201d, a brilliant rework featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/articles\/the-messy-friendship-behind-freak-scene-by-dinosaur-jr\/\">J Mascis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cDrivin\u2019 On 9\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Drivin&amp;apos; on 9 (2023 Remaster)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fLikdN6Upj8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also on <em>Last Splash<\/em>, The Breeders\u2019 cover of \u201cDrivin\u2019 On 9\u201d by Ed\u2019s Redeeming Qualities remains one of my favorite alt-country tunes from the 90s. And in Kim\u2019s voice, which pings between aloof and curious, it\u2019s a real tearjerker about longing, a shotgun wedding, and wondering whether one has made a dreadful mistake. It\u2019s a destination song that travels in both directions. The narrator recalls where she\u2019s been, but the anxiety over where she\u2019s heading lingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cGlorious\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Glorious\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OSwgWt0UNgE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGlorious\u201d is indeed glorious. Steve Albini recorded the track, in case you couldn\u2019t tell from the sound of those roomy drums. The Breeders released their debut LP, <em>Pod<\/em>, in 1990, and at this point, Tanya Donelly was still in the band, before leaving to form Belly the following year. The album was a favorite of Kurt Cobain\u2019s, and its raw sound foreshadows Nirvana\u2019s work with Albini on <em>In Utero<\/em>.
