That could have been a reality for The Pretenders when frontwoman Chrissie Hynde nearly refused to release \u201cBrass In Pocket\u201d. Thankfully she didn\u2019t. But here\u2019s how her band\u2019s breakout hit almost didn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pretenders - Brass In Pocket (Official Music Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0H6re3PCP3E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Aiming for the Motown Sound<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Written by Hynde and guitarist James Honeyman-Scott, \u201cBrass In Pocket\u201d became the Pretenders\u2019 first No. 1 single. It was also the first U.K. No. 1 of the 1980s as the band\u2019s self-titled debut ushered in a new era of jangly rock and roll. But Hynde <em>really<\/em> didn\u2019t want to release the song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI did not like it at first. I said that would go out over my dead body. That was my famous quote,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/behind-the-song-brass-in-pocket-by-the-pretenders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> <em>American Songwriter<\/em> in 2020. \u201cI didn\u2019t like it because I didn\u2019t think I knew what it was. I thought it sounded like it was trying to be a Motown song, but it didn\u2019t quite get it. It didn\u2019t quite make it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though she liked Honeyman-Scott\u2019s riff, Hynde was bashful about the sound of her voice. Still, she\u2019s grateful for \u201cBrass In Pocket\u201d and how it helped sustain, as hit songs tend to do, the Pretenders\u2019 career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Does It Mean?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The title originated with a Northern musician who had dropped a suit off to be dry-cleaned and asked, \u201cWas there any brass in pocket?\u201d Hynde liked the phrase and combined it with a Cockney slang for \u201ca**.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo bottle and glass rhymes with a**. In England, to say somebody has a lot of a**, they have a lot of funk. So you say, \u2018That guy has a lot of bottle\u2019,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/behind-the-song-brass-in-pocket-by-the-pretenders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Got brass in pocket,<br>Got bottle, I\u2019m gonna use it.<br>Intention, I feel inventive,<br>Gonna make you, make you, make you notice<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pretenders\u2019 debut topped the U.K. albums chart and reached the Top 10 in the U.S. It was a pivotal release as punk, post-punk, and new wave bands were redefining rock music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along with tracks like \u201cKid\u201d, \u201cPrecious\u201d, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/pretenders\/stop-your-sobbing\">\u201cStop Your Sobbing\u201d<\/a>, \u201cBrass In Pocket\u201d may have echoed the music of the 1960s, but it remains an 80s touchstone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Photo by Gary Gershoff\/Getty Images<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chrissie Hynde didn&#8217;t want to release what became The Pretenders&#8217; breakout song.
