Produced by his youngest son, Micah, the title track finds the country legend reflecting on his long life and the people he\u2019s lost along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/tom-waits\/last-leaf\">\u201cLast Leaf\u201d<\/a> was written by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, and first recorded by Waits for his 2011 LP <em>Bad As Me<\/em>. Speaking of endurance, Keith Richards sings backing vocals on the original. But the Waits\u2019s version feels wobbly, like he had stumbled into a dark bar, and the only other patron was The Rolling Stones\u2019 guitarist who submits and joins in on the bluesy hymn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in Nelson\u2019s voice, it\u2019s a sobering reflection from a vantage point that few will ever see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Willie Nelson - Last Leaf (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NySpcFpPcQg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Autumn Took the Rest<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using an autumn metaphor, Nelson ponders old age. When you\u2019ve lived for nearly a century, it\u2019s likely your loved ones are no longer around. So here he remains, observing one loss after the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I\u2019m the last leaf on the tree,<br>The autumn took the rest.<br>But it won\u2019t take me,<br>I\u2019m the last leaf on the tree<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though his loved ones have vanished like ghosts, he\u2019s eager to meet the next generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>When the autumn wind blows, they\u2019re already gone,<br>They flutter to the ground; they just can\u2019t hang on.<br>When there\u2019s nothing in this world that I ain\u2019t seen,<br>I greet all the new ones that are coming in green<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To reiterate his endurance, Nelson says he\u2019s been around since President Eisenhower. Though \u201cIke\u201d isn\u2019t the only U.S. president he\u2019s outlived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>They say I got staying power,<br>Here on the tree.<br>But I\u2019ve been here since Eisenhower,<br>And I\u2019ve outlived even he<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Here Through Eternity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of enduring is surviving. Nelson sings about harsh winters and pelting storms, acknowledging life\u2019s hardships.
