It also tackled a dark subject, one that’s often forgotten or overlooked when the song makes its way onto Halloween playlists. Although the title sounds like it’s something out of a horror movie, it’s actually a protest song inspired by actual events, and it caused some controversy for the band.

The Troubles

O’Riordan wrote “Zombie” during a period of time in Ireland known as the Troubles, in which violence broke out between Irish nationalists fighting for Ireland’s independence and unionists who wanted Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom. The song was written specifically in response to a bombing carried out by the Irish Republican Army (IRA). The incident injured dozens of people and killed a three-year-old and 12-year-old boy in Warrington, England, on March 20, 1993. Although she wrote it with an acoustic guitar, O’Riordan wanted the song’s sound to reflect its subject matter.

“I wanted ‘Zombie’ to be a really aggressive song because it was about an aggressive subject: a child’s life being taken by violence,” she explained in a 1995 interview.

Hogan agreed that “the heavier sound was the right thing for the song.”

“If it was soft,” he said, “it wouldn’t have had that impact. It would stand out in the live set because of that.”

“Zombie” opens with a reference to the violence, which led to the death of a child.

Another head hangs lowly
Child is slowly taken
And the violence caused such silence
Who are we mistaken.

As the verse continues, O’Riordan sings about the reaction to the violence. She seeks to distance herself and her family from it, saying it doesn’t represent her or her views. In 2017, she spoke about being affected by the deaths of children, saying, “So I suppose that’s why I was saying, ‘It’s not me’ – that even though I’m Irish it wasn’t me, I didn’t do it. Because being Irish, it was quite hard, especially in the UK when there was so much tension.”

But you see
It’s not me
It’s not my family.

The second verse continues to focus on the effect of violence on families, specifically mothers who lost their children.

Another mother’s breakin’
Heart is taking over
When the violence causes silence
We must be mistaken.

O’Riordan also notes that the violence has been raging for decades and nothing has really changed.

It’s the same old theme
Since nineteen-sixteen
In your head
In your head
They’re still fightin’.

The word “zombie” repeated in the chorus can be interpreted a few different ways. It can refer to people mindlessly following instructions to carry out violence. Or it can refer to the people killed as a result. Either way, O’Riordan’s intense vocal delivery is what makes the song so memorable, and it’s part of why it remains the band’s biggest hit.

Photo by Lester Cohen/Getty Images

The Cranberries’ biggest hit, “Zombie”, is often misinterpreted, and it was inspired by a violent bombing that killed two children.

"savage_platform_show_affiliate_disclaimer":false
"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[12
152,18,214
19
post-6232","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-features","tag-1990s","tag-rock-music","tag-the-cranberries
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
