However, \u201cMarianne\u201d, the second song on the Dublin rock band\u2019s excellent album, was thankfully saved by the advice of Fontaines\u2019 longtime manager, Trevor Dietz. It\u2019s a bittersweet tribute to Dietz, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.ie\/irish-news\/exceptionally-intelligent-kind-and-compassionate-family-pay-tribute-to-fontaines-dc-manager-trevor-dietz-at-inquest\/a\/163293415.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">died<\/a> in June at age 47.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fontaines D.C. - Marianne (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lWNxWy012Ro?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The band dedicated <em>Dopamine Chamber<\/em> to Dietz, whom they considered like a sixth bandmate. And \u201cMarianne\u201d likely wouldn\u2019t have made the track listing without Fontaines\u2019 manager running interference. When they met with Dietz to play him songs from the new album, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DcL_mERnGrD\/?img_index=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> they were \u201cabsolute lunatics\u201d to keep \u201cMarianne\u201d off the record. They took the advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Behind the Lyrics<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMarianne\u201d describes emotional escapism as a couple drifts apart and one spirals further than the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Dream fog is calling your man,<br>You were walking from the room.<br>It\u2019s all the same to Marianne,<br>If you should come along.<br>\u2019Cause all the world is in a way,<br>We\u2019re only moving on<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, as her partner fades emotionally, Marianne wants to disappear into her own abyss of desperation. The song is dark and gloomy. Propelled by a persistent synth that echoes the character\u2019s emotional doom loop, \u201cMarianne\u201d feels like the moment a dream becomes a nightmare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This year you should come and stay here,<br>You can follow my lead,<br>I can help you disappear.<br>Cinematic feeling,<br>Understand this is your life,<br>You can go on dreaming,<br>You can go under the knife, Marianne<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Your Fatal Match<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She hoped this relationship would have lasted forever. But now she\u2019s stuck in a desolate limbo. It feels like a permanent trap she can\u2019t avoid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This could be your fatal match,<br>\u2019Cause I\u2019m wired off the fuel.<br>If anybody got a one-way pass,<br>Does anybody wanna throw?<br>Does anybody want a one-way sleep?<br>I know a body wanna go<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marianne can\u2019t see a way out. But she\u2019s desperate to escape. Perhaps to a kind of dopamine-filled chamber.
