He was struggling with schizophrenia and substance abuse, leading his bandmates to fire him. He was replaced by David Gilmour, who was originally intended to be a second guitarist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As they moved on without him, Pink Floyd wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/pink-floyd\/shine-on-you-crazy-diamond\">&#8220;Shine On You Crazy Diamond&#8221;<\/a> with music by Gilmour and Richard Wright and lyrics by Roger Waters. The ambitious nine-part track bookended <em>Wish You Were Here<\/em>, released in 1975, and totaled 25 minutes. When the band played early versions of the song live, they often dedicated it to Barrett.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Tribute to Barrett<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond [Official Music Video]\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cWGE9Gi0bB0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Shine On You Crazy Diamond&#8221;, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinkfloyd.com\/shine-on-you-crazy-diamond-pts-1-9-new-stereo-mix-out-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as described on Pink Floyd&#8217;s website<\/a>, is &#8220;imbued with feelings of guilt, frustration and sadness at not just the decline of Syd\u2019s health, but the failings of society and modern life.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI remember feeling very sad about Syd,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/pink-floyds-tribute-to-syd-barrett-and-the-moment-that-moved-the-band-to-tears\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Waters said when he looked back on the time<\/a>. \u201cAnd there was guilt there, too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Waters has also called the song an &#8220;homage to Syd&#8221; and a &#8220;heartfelt expression of\u2026 my admiration for the talent and my sadness for the loss of the friend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/lyrics\/pink-floyd\/shine-on-you-crazy-diamond\">The song&#8217;s lyrics<\/a> describe Barrett as someone who &#8220;shone like the sun&#8221; in his youth but has changed and now has eyes &#8220;like black holes in the sky.&#8221; They also address the impact Pink Floyd&#8217;s success had on him, saying he was &#8220;caught in the crossfire of childhood and stardom&#8221; and ultimately &#8220;wore out your welcome.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The song ends on a bittersweet note, with hopes for a happy reunion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>And we&#8217;ll bask in the shadow<br>Of yesterday&#8217;s triumph<br>And sail on the steel breeze<br>Come on you boy child, you winner and loser,<br>Come on you miner for truth and delusion,<br>And shine<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the band was in the final mixing sessions, Barrett stopped by the studio unannounced, and his appearance had changed so much that his former bandmates didn&#8217;t recognize him. Keyboardist Rick Wright called the moment &#8220;shocking.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Seven years of no contact and then to walk in while we&#8217;re actually doing that particular track,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/this-britain\/syd-barrett-the-crazy-diamond-407618.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he said when he recalled the incident<\/a>. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know &#8211; coincidence, karma, fate, who knows?
