Some events aren’t just for the history books—they’re immortalized in song. After hearing about a deadly shipwreck, folk musician Gordon Lightfoot was inspired to write what has become his signature and career-defining song, the six-minute-long ballad “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

The ore carrier SS Edmund Fitzgerald sunk on November 10, 1975, during a storm on Lake Superior with 50-foot waves and 100-mile-an-hour winds. All 29 crew members were killed. It remains the largest ship to have sunk on the lake, and the exact cause of the sinking remains unknown.

Lightfoot learned of the wreck through an article in Newsweek, the first to detail the sinking, and felt the tragedy had gone “unnoticed.” “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” was released less than a year later, in August of 1976. Musically, the song was modeled after traditional Irish folk music.

“I already had a melody in my mind and it was from an old Irish dirge that I heard when I was about 3 and a half years old,” Lightfoot explained in a Reddit AMA. “I think it was one of the first pieces of music that registered to me as being a piece of music. That’s where the melody comes from, from an old Irish folk song.”
