Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo, for example, do not make it difficult to discern who they are singing about. This is not just a recent practice. Some artists in the 1970s wrote songs about their breakups, which produced top hits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;You&#8217;re So Vain&#8221; by Carly Simon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Carly Simon - You&#039;re So Vain\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lT7I40wWYAQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It was much speculated who Carly Simon could have possibly written her 1972 hit &#8220;You&#8217;re So Vain&#8221; about. Simon had a long list of famous romantic partners. Many speculated that the song could be about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/musicians\/carly-simon-youre-so-vain-inspiration\">Warren Beatty, Michael Crichton,&nbsp;David Geffen,&nbsp;Kris Kristofferson, Terrence Malick,&nbsp;Jack Nicholson,&nbsp;Cat Stevens,&nbsp;James Taylor,&nbsp;John Travolta, or&nbsp;even Sean Connery.<\/a> That is a lot of possibilities. However, Simon narrowed it down to one herself in an 1983 interview with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/lifestyle\/style\/1983\/10\/30\/carly-simon-anxiety-38\/16c584f8-6e76-4350-821d-9e02f18d92f2\/\">Washington Post<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It certainly sounds like it was about Warren Beatty,&#8221; said Simon. &#8220;He certainly thought it was about him \u2014 he called me and said thanks for the song.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Simon never confirmed the song was about Beatty, it sounds likely. Buckingham wrote the song soon after he and Nicks broke apart. That is not all, Nicks performed the background vocals for the song written by her ex about her. Much like &#8220;Silver Springs,&#8221; the song Nicks wrote about Buckingham to perform with the band. The tension while recording and on stage remained over the years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicks had some opinions on Buckingham&#8217;s writing and the truthfulness of it. Two lines in the song say <em>&#8220;Packing up \/ Shacking up is all you want to do.&#8221; <\/em>These lines suggest the Nicks carelessly went from one relationship to another after the two split. However, in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/parade.com\/news\/iconic-go-your-own-way-lyric-stevie-nicks-called-complete-lie-fleetwood-mac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Classic Rock Stories<\/a>, Nicks addressed how she felt about the lyric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want you to know that line about \u2018shacking up\u2019? I never shacked up with anybody while I was with him,&#8221; said Nicks. &#8220;I was the one who broke up with him. The song ties all of his emotions to what he was experiencing with the divorce and the outcomes surrounding his feelings of guilt and regret. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/writteninmysoulc0000flan\/page\/96\/mode\/2up?q=Tangled+Up+in+Blue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Written In My Soul: Conversations With Rock\u2019s Great Songwriters<\/a><\/em>, released in 1987, Dylan is quoted saying what he was trying to achieve when writing the song:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;That was another one of those things where I was trying to do something that I didn\u2019t think had ever been done before. In terms of trying to tell a story and be a present character in it without it being some kind of fake, sappy attempted tearjerker,\u201d said Dylan. \u201cI was trying to be somebody in the present time while conjuring up a lot of past images.
