Album: The Best Damn Thing (2007)
Charted: 2 1

  • In this song, Avril sings from the perspective of a girl who likes a guy that already has a girlfriend. Her strategy is to be very persistent in trying to convince him that she is the better choice.
  • Unlike some of the more personal songs on Lavigne's 2004 album Under My Skin, this is simply a fun song reflecting the social tribulations of a schoolgirl. Lavigne was married to Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 when she recorded it.
  • Lavigne wrote this song with the hitmaker Dr. Luke (Lukasz Gottwald), who was also a producer on the track. It was his first US #1 as a co-writer; the following year he topped the chart as one of four writers on Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl."
  • In 1978, a pop group called The Rubinoos recorded the song "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," which bears some resemblance to this. The writers of The Rubinoos song sued Lavigne in 2007 over the similarities. Avril responded with this statement: "I had never heard this song in my life and their claim is based on five words! All songs share similar lyrics and emotions. As humans we speak one language. Let it be crystal clear that I have not ripped anyone off or done anything wrong."

Avril Lavigne reached a confidential agreement with The Rubinoos in January 2008.

Following the disclosure that a confidential settlement had been reached in their federal lawsuit, Dunbar and Gangwer of the Rubinoos said in a statement on January 15, 2008: "We are satisfied that any similarities between the two songs resulted from Avril and Luke's use of certain common and widely used lyrics. We therefore completely exonerate Avril and Luke from any wrongdoing of any kind in connection with the claims made by us in our lawsuit."
  • In an interview on Britain's Channel 4 TV, Avril Lavigne explained: "The song is just a fun song and it doesn't really mean anything. Writing it I just starting singing, 'I don't like your girlfriend, I think you need a new one,' thinking this is cool. So we just went in that direction."
  • Avril Lavigne earned two million dollars in a year after her management company uploaded this song's official video to YouTube. Due largely to a coordinated fan campaign, the video clocked up almost 100 million hits from around the world between mid 2007 and mid 2008. This meant that there was close to 100 million ad-views and even after YouTube took its cut, there was close to $2m owing to the Canadian songstress.
  • On the CD/DVD of the album, if features a part where they are making this song. Avril started randomly blowing into her beer bottle while listening to the playback and it happened to be right on pitch with the song. They ended up recording her blowing into the bottle and can now be faintly heard in the background during the last remaining seconds of the song where she sings the chorus one more time. >>

  • This song was used twice on the show The Secret Life of the American Teenager. In the first episode, it was the first song ever played on the show, and on the second season finale, it played when they were looking at who had gotten together, with the character Amy in bed sleeping after having her baby, John. >>

  • Speaking about the song becoming her first #1, Lavigne told Billboard magazine: "Sometimes I've found that the stuff I write really quickly and don't really think about tends to be the magic. We both knew, Dr. Luke and I, that that song was going to do well."
  • In The Office episode "Deposition" (2008), Kelly (Mindy Kaling) sings this to taunt Pam about Jim's ping-pong skills.

  • AnonymousPersonally I think this is one of the most cringy song she ever did next to that hello kitty song. But it was catchy and stuck in people's heads
  • Audrey from Lawrance, MaI love this song.
  • Neelam from Ba, Fijiavril rocks. This song is superb and to be honest we don't have to follow that situation in our real life....coz at the end of the day the song is a hit...avril is satisfied ....and so am i.

  • Riki from Tampere, FinlandThis long has terrible lyrics and the music is... horrible.
Way to go Avril, the "PUNK PRINCESS"... xD
  • Jessie from Dallas, Txavril rocks =) still like this song
  • Marissa from Akron, Ohit's not like no one else has ever wanted to be with someone that was already taken. Case in point: "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield. It's part of human nature to think the grass is greener.
  • Lisa from Montreal, Qci love Avril's songs but with this one song i lost a lot of respect for her.

i see it as this song encourages the female population who have no respect for relationships to go ahead and pursue someone who is previously taken and ruin that relationship. there is far too many people who have little enough respect for relationships and sure this song sounds good but the message behind it is go ahead and covet anyone you want because the other person who would be hurt by it doesn't matter anyways.

see it as being too critical, but the words of a song mean more then whether or not it sounds good. people are easily influenced by what they hear. and if someone wants to hear its o.k. and absolutely fine to covet someone then that's what they will take from the song.
  • Jessie from Dallas, TxI love this song, only because it describes a situation I'm in right now, where my best friend who I want to ask out has a girlfriend who I think is a total idiot :P
  • Matt from Kingston, OnWell, I'm not a fan of this song, but didn't the Rolling Stones have that "hey hey you you" in Get Off My Cloud? And that was before any of those two songs were recorded
  • Felecity from Brampton, OnJessica's right. Seriously, real mature to trash Avril (that was sarcasm, if you didn't know). Amanda is also right. This is not... nice. But Avril admits it herself that it's cocky, but it's just a fun stupid song.
  • Brittany from Townsville, AustraliaAvril's name is french for April :0 funny dat. Its a very kool song (THE VIDEO CLIP IS SO LOL (FUNNY).
  • Jessica from Buffalo, NyI think Avril rocks!Just because you don't think so, doesn't mean you should be mean.I like almost all of her songs. If you really hate someone you should stay away from them!!!Don't trash them! That's really mature!AND I totally agree with Kelsi, She isn't a poser!!!She just has her own style like everyone else!!!
  • Aviva from Somewhere, Mdthe music video as well as the song are so much fun to watch and sing to!!!
  • Mikala from Sacramento, Cathis song sucks
  • Paige from Murfreesboro, TnAvril Lavigne has been one of my favorite artists since i was young.
    i like this song.
i played this song to a guy i liked and it cracked him up.
    i have him now.
    he dumped his girlfriend.
she is happy with her new man and i am happy with my baby.
    everyone's happy.
    thanks avril.
  • Amanda from Evergreen, CoI HATE THAT GIRL! She is horrible to sing a song with this kind of a meaning! Stealing someone else's boyfriend is SO NOT COOL!
  • Catherine from Glasgow, Englandhas anyone noticed how horrible the lyrics in this song are? it is not ok to steal someone elses boyfriend!!! She goes on about how precious she is and young girls who listen to this song think that it's ok to act like that and throw golf balls at someone just because you don't like the way they look and then steal their boyfriend! i'd like to have seen the other girl kick avril's ass at the end of the video, get your own man avril!
  • Madison from Norway, MeI try not to listen to any songs that appear on Kidz Bop...
  • Rachel from Cleveland, Alavril is doing the best she can. come on you try being a popstar and see where it leads you. it's not her fault. don't blame somebody for one freakin thing. it's not like the worlds coming to an end. chill out!! I love you anyway Avril. KEEP ROCKING THE LIVES OF AMERICA!
  • Rose from St.louis, MoActaully, Id say country is the opposite of rap. Or maybe christian music
  • Sara from Medford, NjI used to like this song alot....i still do just not as much. I like her old music sooooo much better, way better. she used to be different and it was cool, just like morgan said she is kinda u could say barbie or britney spear or ashlee simpson(cause ashlee isnt a true punk rocker, not all her songs have that punk rock sound. her old cd did but not her latest cd not at all)and her new music is played on mtv and everyone knows any band or singer that is played all over mtv are sellouts....besides u never have hip hop or rap interfer with punk rock AT ALL!THEIR LIKE THE OPPOSITE GENRES! well maybe metal is the opposite of rap but whatever. the point is if avril is going popish i just gotta say punk rock is fading out. COME BACK BLINK 182!!!!!!!!!!
  • Morgan from Gresham, Ori used to really love this song, but it started to get annoying and not to offend u diehards that worship avril lavigne but she went TOTAL barbie princess on us.
i used to really look up to her for being different than any one else but now shes mainstream.
and WHAT is up with the rap remix of this song??!! *gags* seriously, avril went awall on us.
  • Dave from Cardiff, WalesI hate this song! It's so utterly ridiculous! Avril's early stuff wasn't at all bad, but this just sucks!
  • Rose from St.louis, Mohey! Listen to what you are saying about a real human being with real feelings! So what, this isnt the kind of stuff she used to sing, maybe she just wanted to try something different. She isnt a poser because of one song. Maybe all of us are posers. I mean, all of us do something that other people do, whether we're punk, goth, emo, main stream, or anything else. Its not like she even said she was punk! That is what other people labeled her as.
I bet most of you are different than you were three years ago.Sometimes we need to hear a carefree song, cuz sometimes thats how we feel.
Anyway, I bet we all have felt this way. Its not meaningless, its just that the meaning is easier to see than in most of her other songs. Give her a break!
  • Nick from Edmonton, CanadaI agree with Shannon. We need to go back to a time when the lyrics actually told a meaningful story or idea
  • Shannon from Bakersfield , CaGosh this girl has problems.Write a song about being some guys girlfriend even when shes married.Wow that's really mature. And no she is not punk. She never was.Sure she good for the little ones to listen to and i'm fine with that. But really why is she brainwashing all of us 14 year olds that need to be more serious about sh!t.You make me sick avril...
  • Sam from Portsmouth, Vayes she is. A real punk would never go mainstream.
  • Kelsi from I-town(ionia), Mii love this song...yea it may not be Avril...but hey it's good...she ISN'T a poser...
