Songfacts®:

  • BBMak are a trio comprised of the British lads Christian Burns, Stephen McNally and Mark Barry - all in their early 20s when this song was released. They called themselves a cross between The Goo Goo Dolls and 98 Degrees, with boy band looks but real musical chops.

They co-wrote many of their own songs, including "Back Here," their biggest hit. They also played on with Burns and McNally providing their signature acoustic guitar strum.
  • The song talks about a story between a guy and a girl. The band members say that the guy in the song did a stupid thing and he wishes that he can be with the girl again because he's sorry.

"It's just a love song," Christian Burns told MTV. "We wrote it with a guy named Phil Thornalley... we went out to his house one day and started playing this little guitar thing, and it just went from there. Forty-five minutes later, 'Back Here' was finished."
  • "Back Here" was BBMak's first single. In America it rose to #13 in the summer of 2000, earning them a spot opening for Britney Spears. The song was also a #1 Adult Contemporary hit.
  • The song was initially released in their native UK but didn't make an impact. After it found success in America, it was reissued in the UK and reached #5.
  • The three group members wrote the song with Phil Thornalley, who also worked on the 1997 Natalie Imbruglia hit "Torn." The producers were Oliver Leiber and John Shanks. Leiber did a lot of work with Paula Abdul; Shanks was also producing Michelle Branch around this time.
  • BBMak followed up with "Still On Your Side" and "Ghost Of You And Me," which were minor hits. They broke up in 2003 after their second album stiffed, but reunited in 2018 and put out another album the following year.
