Only One

Album: Ocean Avenue (2003)

  • This is about Ryan Key, the lead singer, and his decision to leave his girlfriend. It was about a breakup with his girlfriend and knowing that it was the right thing to do, but not knowing exactly sure why. He knew it was a good decision but struggled to understand it. "It was a weird breakup," Key told MTV News. "It was one of those where I felt like I had to do it, even though she didn't do anything wrong. I just needed some space to figure life out for a while on my own. And I think that's what the song says." >>

  • Key said the song's riff was discovered by accident: "We were testing something else out and just tracked it right away. We then added a drum loop to it and just kept adding tracks. We built it track by track in the studio, and we've never really done that before."
  • The album version features a violin solo from Sean Mackin during the bridge. Because the song clocked in at over four minutes, it was pared down for radio airplay by nixing the solo.
  • The music video, which finds Key and his girl squaring off against police officers during an increasingly chaotic protest, was the first Yellowcard video to feature bassist Pete Mosely, who had just rejoined the band. It's also the last video to feature Ben Harper on lead guitar, who split from the group before the release of their followup, Lights and Sounds.
  • This was used on the TV show Charmed in the series finale, "Forever Charmed," in 2006.

  • Sean from Gardner, Mathis song rocks. it means alot to me. because i was in love with this girl and i broke up with her because my friends were telling me lies about her. they wernt my real friends. and then i went out with another girl to try and move on from my old girlfriend. and then one of my real friends made me realize that she was the one for me. i asked her out again and were doing awesome. ilove her and she really is my only one
  • Hope from Naperville, IlReally? I though it was about a relationship that was failing, but he didn't want it to fail, and was about to give up and saying those words, "You are my only one." would be his last attempt to save it.
It worked for me except I wasn't going to sit there and let my relationship fall apart.
  • Dinko from That Place, IaI love this song like a lot. Worst part bout it though is that it brings back bad memories...Either way, Yellowcard did amazing with it.
  • Sandy from Miami, Flwhoevers saying that Only One is about Warren must be retarded.. seriously no offense but wtf.. "you are my only one" to a guy!?.. i really doubt Ryan's gay.. think before you speak i'd understand ocean avenue to be about Warren cuz you know it can be understood in a friend type of thing but Only One for a guy?... you gotta be kidding me..
  • Dominique from --, Nythis song is so cute. i love it.
  • Cody from Saint Louis, MoThis song means a lot to me, because i love a girl so much, that even after it may end, she will still be my "Only One"
  • Taylor from Aurora, Cono offense to the band but i really dont like them that much...but this is the sweetest song i have ever heard (it depends on how you look at it) and even though i dont like the band this is my favorite song in the world, they did a great job with it
  • Ace from Madrid, SpainIt's cheezy, but it isn't. It thrusts straight to my heart. I love it.
  • Shong from Wausau, Wisuch a good's about key leaving his girlfriend for a band...making it really tough for him...i love this good
  • Sharon from Aucklandi love this song soooooooooo much. it is my fave son in the whole world. go yellowcard!!! it is so so sad and i am almost crying as i type this just thinking about it.
  • Bella from Wmspt, PaThis song is very special. I dont know who it is about and Im not claiming to but I know when I hear it I get this sad feeling. you know the feeling when your watching a love movie and the guy(or girl)is telling the other person that with all their heart they love them and that through all the stuff that went down between them they love them! You almost want to cry hearing it!
  • Ashley from North Lima, OhI love this song. I can undestand the situation, I care for someone extremly too.
  • Matt from Coralville, IaThis song is a great one to play with a girlfriend if she might be mad at you. its so deep, it takes away from the cheessy ness of having a song explain things. its awesome
  • Vilena from Rowland Hts, CaYes yes...I agree with Manda... Im so sure that this song is about his gurlfriend that he loved so much but he had to break up wit her =[
  • Manda from Mukilteo, Wawelll "Erik" im pretty sure the song believe isnt about Warren, the band member that left. so not ALL the songs are about him, including this one.
  • Kara from Moro, IlI love this song. It makes me wanna cry.
  • Tim from Phila, RiAs Erick said, this song is about a band member who left the band . It may appear to be a love song but it isn't. It is still a great song and YC is awesome

  • Shong from Wausau, Withis song is about ryan key having to break up with his girlfriend to be in the band...
  • Brian from Lakeland, Fli have never been a big fan of yellowcard but this song simply rocks. for my senior Grad Night i got to see them Live at Disney in Orlando. throughout the whole concert everyone was just jumping around like normal rock concerts. when they started to play this song the whole crowd got completely silent. all the way up to the pre-chorus (i feel so broken up) everyone was just standing there in awe. when ryan started singing the chorus, the whole crowd sang together in unison (Here I Go). it was probably the most eerie feeling i have ever had in my whole life. i will never forget looking around at all of my classmates knowing that they were feeling the exact same thing. unforgettable experience
  • Erik from Tempe, AzActually, whoever posted the fact is wrong... this song, along with every other song on the album, ocean avenue, is a about a guy... although all of the songs seem to be love songs and all that, they are all about the former band member that left the band...
  • Shong from Wausau, Wireally good song...i like it a lot...even before it became there single!!
  • Ann from Dallas, TxI Love this song so much. it reminds me of my boyfriend and what happened between us. i was glad to meet my new one because then he began to be my "only One" and the both of us enjoy listening to that song.
  • Chloe from Hampshire, EnglandJust like everyone else I love this song too. I dpn;t know what it is about the song but it sounds really deep and distant. In the chorus, "here I go, Scream my lungs out to try to get to you - youre my only one" Ryan sings it as if it means everything and puts everything he can into it. He really does scream his lungs out to try and get to her. thank u xxx
  • Annabeth from Kutztown, PaThe harmonies in this song send shivers down my spine. I don't know about the story behind it, but when I heard it I thought it was about a guy who deeply cares for a girl, and he has to leave her, but he wants her to know how much he loves her.
  • Gabe from Utica, NyGod I love this song. You can tell when you listen to it that Ryan put a lot into it. I don't really get the music video. The guitar in this song is amazing.
  • Meghan from Fort Collins, Coi love this song. i can't really relate to it that well, but it gave me goosebumps the first time i heard it. i pretty much love any song about love, breakups or... how much one person loves another. maybe this song touches me so well b/c it's a mix of both
