• George Pope from British Columbia - BcGenerally if you've a warrtant in Indiana, but you're elsewhere, you're fine, unless arrested for some thing else & yjr vopps, as is SOP, check for warrants, then they call up Indiana & say, "Hey, we got your guy? You wanna come get him?" & the other cops decide if they want to spend the money to send a sheriff over to get him. if not then the DA just notes to the court, if the defense lawyer doesn't object (irrellevent, this prejudices the jury now against my client on a charge/accusation that's not been proved in court) , his other warrant as evidence that the guy should not be granted cheap, or any, bail.
  
  Happenmed to me -- the warrant issuerssaid, "If he wants to hitchhike back here, we'll book him(under the warrant) if he turns himself in." & the cops who had me just turned me loose (no murder involved--I was a "person of interest" in a burglary)

There could be more to the story than would make sense to include, but because the police will not go into another state to have a shootout with a suspect, Indiana could only want him in the sense of wanting him to be extradited after committing a crime in another state. Extradition can happen for a capital murder case but is not a guarantee in most crimes, as reported in a recent USA Today article: "Each fugitive's case is chronicled in a confidential FBI database that police use to track outstanding warrants. In 186,873 of those cases, police indicated that they would not spend the time or money to retrieve the fugitive from another state, a process known as extradition."

• Bou from Bloomington, InLinda's comment about "why Indiana?" is--pardon the bad pun--dead wrong. The death penalty was still in force nationwide in 1970, when the song was released, and electrocution was widespread as an execution method. The first lethal injection did not occur in the US until 1982, so my guess is that electrocution was even the main method of execution in all US states at that time. Furthermore, Indiana abandoned electrocution in the mid-nineties, and electrocution remains an option in a couple of states even today.
  
  All that said, I'm no judge of the song. You can well imagine it got played here in Hoosier Land until we were all sick of it!
