3 Songs That Launched Debut Country Albums to No. 1 in the 2000s

Country music evolved significantly in the 2000s, distancing itself from traditional roots and leaning more towards pop and rock sensibilities. With that, we saw a new era of country music greats. Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart has been around since Billboard’s first issue in 1964. With a hit single and frequent radio airplay, these country albums soared to No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart in the early 2000s.

“Redneck Woman” by Gretchen Wilson

Released in 2004, “Redneck Woman” was a declaration of one’s true self. The track was born out of a conversation between Gretchen Wilson and former Lonestar member John Rich. While discussing her image, Wilson declared, “I’m a redneck woman!” to which Rich replied, “What’s wrong with that?” Wilson and Rich took that statement and created a song that spoke for all female country artists who felt unappreciated at the time. The song was released as the lead single of Wilson’s debut album on March 15, 2004. It peaked at No. 1 on the US Hot Country Songs chart.

Due to the success of the debut single, Wilson’s debut album Here For The Party hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Wilson’s next two albums would also hit No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart.

“Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy)” by Big & Rich

2004 was a creative year for John Rich. Previously, Rich had played bass guitar and shared lead vocal duties in the 1990s country group Lonestar. John Rich and Kenny Alpha (a.k.a. Big Kenny) met at a club in the late 1990s, shortly after Rich departed from Lonestar. Alpha had recently recorded a rock album that was being held from release by his record label. Big and Rich began writing songs together. They recorded their debut album, Horse Of A Different Color, in late 2003. The album’s debut single, “Wild West Show,” peaked at No. 21 on the Billboard Country Singles chart. The album’s second single, “Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy),” established the songwriting duo’s hit-making capabilities.

The song’s debut performance was at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2004. Followed by a popular music video featuring many cameos, including Gretchen Wilson, the song peaked at No. 11 on the Country Singles chart. With two more hit singles following that year, Horse of a Different Color hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart.

“Tim McGraw” by Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift’s 2006 self-titled debut album is considered one of the most successful debut albums of all time. The album caught attention, given the success of the debut single “Tim McGraw.” Co-written by Swift at only 16 years old, the song peaked at No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 6 on the Hot Country Songs chart. The hit single helped push her next four singles to become hits as well. The album’s third single, “Our Song,” topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. The debut album sold 40,000 copies in its first week and became No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums. In 2025, Billboard named Taylor Swift the No. 1 artist of the 21st century, with 14 No. 1 albums.
