5 of the Most Expensive Albums Ever Recorded

Recording an album can rack up major costs, from musicians to producers. And the longer the recording goes on, the more expensive it can get. Some musicians, naturally, are perfectionists. Some have spent millions of dollars in the studio, setting records in the process, and the album sales don’t always offset that cost.

Michael Jackson – Invincible, HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I, and Dangerous

Three of the Top 10 most expensive albums ever made belong to Michael Jackson. But the most expensive by a large margin was Invincible, his 10th and final album. The album cost about $30 million, likely because Jackson hired nine producers who reportedly recorded up to 87 songs, cut down to just 16 for the release.

Guns Nโ€™ Roses – Chinese Democracy

Guns ‘N’ Roses spent $13 million recording Chinese Democracy, likely due to the fact that the album took 14 years to record. On top of the typical costs, Geffen had agreed to pay frontman Axl Rose $1 millionย when the album was finished, plus another $1 millionย if it was finished by March 1, 1999, a deadline Rose did not meet.

Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

For My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, rapper Kanye West spent $3 million recording in Hawaii. On top of a large roster of guest musicians and producers, West booked all three rooms of the studio 24/7, so if he got stuck working on one song, he could jump seamlessly to another.

Def Leppard – Hysteria

Def Leppard’s recording sessions for their fourth album, Hysteria, werenโ€™t easyโ€”the process took three years, due in large part to drummer Rick Allen losing his left arm in a car accident. The band ultimately spent $3.5 million and needed to sell five million copies just to break even, but fortunately, they far surpassed that, with 20 million sold.

Fleetwood Mac – Tusk

When Fleetwood Mac headed into the studio to record their follow-up to Rumours, they spent $1.4 million custom-fitting the recording studio. That cost made Tusk the most expensive rock album ever made up to that point. And although it sold four million copies, that was nothing compared to Rumoursโ€™ 20 million, marking one of the largest drops in sales between consecutive albums in music history.
