In 2025, Ella Langley finished her tour early and returned home to focus on her mental health. It was then that she rediscovered herself while connecting with her past. Langley focused on drinking less and determining what she wanted out of life and her success. During this time, she wrote many of the songs that would end up on her 2026 album, Dandelion. These songs captured her rediscovery, specifically on songs such as “Loving Life Again,” “Be Her,” and “Butterfly Season.”
“Butterfly Season” is a duet with country star Miranda Lambert. Lambert co-produced Dandelion and co-wrote multiple tracks on the record. The two artists have separately grown in recent years, so the pairing on this track is a brilliantly timed collaboration. It’s about personal growth, using the butterfly’s metamorphosis as a metaphor. The first verse gets right to the point, as many Langley songs do. This mention of spring represents change within herself. Planting flowers is metaphorical for personal growth as well.
I see a different road, I see a different way
I think it’s time to grow, I think it’s time to change
Time to rearrange
Yeah, I’ve been drinking less and I’ve been thinking more
Been wanting different things
That’s what spring is for
Planting flowers on my porch
“It’s Butterfly Season, I’m Finding My Wings”
“A good time for leaving behind the old me / Headed for blue skies and lavender fields
Don’t know where I’m landing, just know how it feels / When it’s time to fly“
The blue sky has been a theme throughout the Dandelion album. Ultimately, it represents this time in Langley’s life, as just a year ago she was in a dark place. She did what she needed to do; she went back home. She left behind the “old her” in doing so.
Don’t even know her /That girl from last October
Right now I’d like to show her / Who we’ve turned into
How the flowers look in June / When we’re on to something new
“Butterfly Season” Was Written The Same Day As Langley’s No. 1 Hit “Choosin’ Texas”
Both “Choosin’ Texas” and “Butterfly Season” were co-written by Joybeth Taylor, Luke Dick, and Miranda Lambert. These co-writers each contributed throughout the new album. One day, they wrote two songs, including “Choosin’ Texas.” Following the writing of these songs, they went to a gas station to buy cigarettes. It was during this gas station journey that they began to reflect on their growth together. “Butterfly Season” was written immediately after, with contributions from the same writing team as “Choosin’ Texas,” on the same day.
