The Bitter Meaning Behind Adele’s Breakup Anthem “Rolling In The Deep”

“Rolling In The Deep” finds Adele when she’s had enough. And it’s the moment her man becomes her ex.

Co-written with producer Paul Epworth, “Rolling In The Deep” echoes the pain of generations of soul singers channeled through Adele’s throaty wails. The cathartic track appears on her second studio album, 21, which itself shifted the trajectory of pop music through the singularity that is Adele.

Behind the Lyrics

The charade is over. Adele sees her cheating man for what he is, and the heartbreak she’s endured will fuel her triumph.

There’s a fire starting in my heart,
Reaching a fever pitch and it’s bringing me out the dark.
Finally, I can see you crystal clear,
Go ahead and sell me out and I’ll lay your sh*t bare.
See how I’ll leave with every piece of you,
Don’t underestimate the things that I will do
.

Though the bluesy track feels empowering, the scars remain. Whatever they once had has been ruined. But she can’t help thinking of how callously he threw it away.

The scars of your love remind me of us,
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all.
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless,
I can’t help feeling
.

This is a redemption song. But it’s also a reckoning. While Adele’s overdubbed backing vocals sound sweet, the sentiment is anything but. She’s bitter and promises he’ll feel pain, too.

We could’ve had it all (You’re gonna wish you never had met me).
Rolling in the deep (Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep).
You had my heart inside of your hand (You’re gonna wish you never had met me).
And you played it to the beat (Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
.

Reap Just What You Sow

Baby, I have no story to be told,
But I’ve heard one on you, now I’m gonna make your head burn.
Think of me in the depths of your despair,
Make a home down there, as mine sure won’t be shared
.

If the song wasn’t clear enough, in 2010, she told Spin, “It’s me saying, ‘Get the f**k out of my house,’ instead of me begging him to come back.”

Turn my sorrow into treasured gold,
You’ll pay me back in kind and reap just what you sow
