In “The Visitor”, Sienna Spiro navigates life and relationships with the anxiety of knowing we are all just passing through. The English singer’s soulful piano ballad is a lament on the temporary and appears on Spiro’s 2026 debut album.
Rented Time
Spiro begins by writing about fleeting time and living with the reality that all things have an expiration date.
We lay on towers, on rented time,
I’m yours for hours, you’re always mine.
All things expire, I know you won’t stay,
But I seem to inspire you to say.
If her partner promises they need nothing more than her, maybe she can buy more time by becoming essential.
Say that you love me, say I’m all you need,
In the back of my mind, I know I’m temporary.
You’re holding me for the night,
For some pleasure if that’s all we are.
Know I’ll always be a visitor in your arms.
Consciousness can play odd tricks on the brain. It makes us feel like stars in our own little movie, one centered on our life. But zooming out, as Carl Sagan once said, this pale blue dot we call Earth “is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena.”
Still, we want to be special. And especially so within a relationship, as Spiro describes here.
It’s in my nature to be cynical,
I want to be remembered so I get hysterical.
I wanna be that one thing, some’ special to you,
Say you won’t forget me, but you always do.
The Temporary Nature of Things
An art exhibit inspired the song’s title. Spiro explained in an Instagram post:
“It’s very hard to put into words what this song means to me. It took me 9 attempts to articulate this feeling I’ve felt my whole life. About two years ago, I was sitting with a friend who mentioned an art exhibition called The Visitor. Of course, I’d heard the word before, but for some reason, it stayed with me.”
She added in the same post, “I think my whole life I’ve felt like a visitor. I’ve always been aware of the temporary nature of things, of life, of time.”
