In a 1976 interview with Richard Cromelin of the Los Angeles Times, Bob Seger said he was a “beautiful loser.” He alludes to his own song, “Beautiful Loser”, the title track of his 1975 album, to effectively explain how he felt regarding his career. Early in Seger’s career, he took on a lot with the hope of being the best.
Seger Calls Himself a “Beautiful Loser”
Seger told Cromelin that the band had done many things wrong, primarily because he was doing too much.
“I was producing, writing, playing lead guitar, and singing lead with the band,” said Seger. “I was doing practically everything, and I guess I bit off too much.”
Seger was inspired by many artists and bands, aiming to be just as good, if not better than them. He explained that he wanted to be able to write like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen.
Not only that, Seger said he “wanted to have a band that was bigger than The Beatles, and wanted to sell more records than anybody.”
However, Seger recognizes that he was taking on too much at the time. Despite becoming widely successful himself, he realized that he did not have to be like the artists he compared himself to.
Some Lyrics From “Beautiful Loser” Relate to Seger’s Early Career
The lyrics in his song “Beautiful Loser” display the idea that he did not have to be the best. They also show how, ultimately, he was the beautiful loser:
“He wants to dream like a young man / With the wisdom of an old man/ He wants his home and security / He wants to live like a sailor at sea / Beautiful loser, where you gonna fall? / You realize you just can’t have it all.”
These lyrics can be easily applied to Seger wishing to be the best and to be like, or better than, many artists he compared himself to. However, he realized he “just don’t need it all,” and that he’s “willing to be second best.”
Seger told Cromelin, “Now I just want to be as good as I can be.”
