On the new Weezer song, “C.E.O.”, the band’s leader, Rivers Cuomo, goes full meta. Cuomo understands that Weezer’s blockbuster debut will forever define him. And in “C.E.O.”, he admits he can’t exist outside the giant shadow of the Blue Album. It’s why Weezer has continued to release a multitude of color-themed self-titled LPs throughout its three-decade career.
The new Weezer track is a purposeful parody and a self-aware return to form. It’s taken from the band’s upcoming 20th studio album. It’s another self-titled release. But it’ll be known as the Gold Album.
They Just Want the Classics
“C.E.O.” begins with a nod to Weezer’s Blue Album classic “Undone – The Sweater Song”. Cuomo, frustrated and bored, complains about the shadow of his band’s masterpiece debut.
Cranking out another 90s jam,
Wish I could do something new,
But nobody wants to hear that.
They just want the classics,
You can’t blame ’em, really,
There’s something special about your early sh*t.
Tired of trying to drag his audience along with him into new directions, Cuomo gives in and writes a new Weezer song in the quiet/loud Pixies’ style of his early hits.
I gotta grow up,
And be a real adult.
Stop complaining,
And give the people what they want.
This is Cuomo the chief executive officer, keeping his band in business.
Here comes the C.E.O.,
I gotta keep this rocket in the sky.
It Was Easier Back Then
He reflects on his childhood and a simpler life before he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. He was a kid in his bedroom—shredding scales on the guitar beneath KISS posters—recording songs on a multi-track cassette machine.
You know, I was just a kid from Connecticut,
Alone in my room playing with a Tascam 688,
I miss those days.
Back then, Cuomo wasn’t chasing the day’s hits, let alone chasing his own culture-shifting records. So he finally convinces himself to stop overthinking it. No one wants a Weezer Odyssey. They want another irony-drenched slacker jam, with a huge riff by the geek-rock maestro. And few have done it better than Rivers Cuomo.
I gotta stop thinking like a mad professor,
’Cause it’s, it’s getting me nowhere.
