The Meaning Behind “Easy Street” by Queens Of The Stone Age and Accepting Life’s Messy Reality

Listening to “Easy Street”, one can imagine a gathering of friends where someone breaks out a guitar and starts singing. It’s free, only somewhat structured, even childlike. It’s the kind of song friends laugh and cry to before everyone finally joins in on a late-night tune about acceptance. Maybe not what you’d expect from Queens Of The Stone Age. That is, if you haven’t been paying attention to Josh Homme’s ever-evolving band.

With help from Nikki Lane, Homme croons an emotional song about personal evolution and all the perfectly imperfect moments it entails.

I’m Chandeliering

The opening verse finds Homme hanging from a chandelier. He feels out of control and notices how others, or perhaps other versions of himself, wish for him to fail.

I’m chandeliering, now I’m fearing the worst,
I hang from the ceiling, hear you pray for my curse,
Those supposed to love me the most are breaking my heart.
Wish I could share a bit more, too petrified
.

He compared the song to hitting your funny bone. “It’s funny because it hurts and it hurts because it’s funny,” he said. But the track, and its beach-side vibe, was recorded loosely without much tweaking or obsessive production. He wanted to highlight the messiness of daily life.

The sound of your voice and the things that you say,
Just shut up and f**k me, or shut up and go away,
You drive me crazy for sure, but I can do that myself
.

Moreover, the singer is content with who he is now and the person he used to be.

If you need me, come and see me on Easy Street,
I ain’t hard to find.
Down on the floor, under the couch are the keys to life,
Been there the whole time
.

I Don’t Believe in Luck

Musically, Homme described the song as a “hug.” At this stage of his band’s career, he feels a sense of freedom that Queens Of The Stone Age isn’t defined by any particular genre. Genre doesn’t matter, only sincerity.

“Violence is never the answer,” you say,
I question how he’s not been punched in the face,
I’m not like that anymore, been dead a long time.
I don’t believe in luck, so you can have mine
.

However, one must be comfortable in their own skin to achieve this kind of confidence. And like Homme’s character in “Easy Street”, the many paths of struggle, despair, and self-doubt can lead one to a place of peace. But you must keep traveling to get there.

Drinking don’t help, but it sure blocks out the help,
Don’t ruin the vibe; I do all that by myself,
Sorry for your loss, but you lost
.

Still, the first obstacle, and often the most stubborn, is the one happening inside the mind.

Amazing to be lost in a maze,
You’ve made up in your mind
.
