It’s been one year since Morgan Wallen‘s triple album, I’m The Problem, was released. Wallen’s fourth studio album was a massive success for the country singer from Tennessee. I’m The Problem hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Top Country Albums chart, UK Albums chart, and the UK Country Albums chart. Wallen compiled an impressive 37 tracks for the album, releasing eight singles. “I Got Better” was the album’s sixth single released from the album. It hit No. 1 on both the Hot Country Songs chart and the Country Airplay chart. Additionally, the single peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 as well.
“I Got Better” is an upbeat anthem with messages of self-growth, rediscovery, and perseverance. Though the lyrics are about a toxic relationship, they can represent letting go of anything you don’t need in your life. It’s an inspiring and relatable message that’s easily accessible to anyone.
Everything’s still pretty much the same ’round here
Neighbors still shootin’ all of next year’s deer
Boys still lose ‘less they’re playin’ at home
But I got better since you got gone
I’m still a few too many on a Friday night
I still try to step in when it ain’t my fight
I’m still me, don’t get me wrong
But I got better since you got gone
Of all the things that don’t change in the area, the narrator himself has changed in a much-needed way. The opening verse explains this well with lines such as “I’m still me, don’t get me wrong. But I got better since you got gone.” Oftentimes, moving on involves zero contact with what is holding you back from getting better.
Morgan Wallen Explains The Message Behind “I Got Better”
In a video posted to TikTok, Wallen explains the meaning behind the track in front of a Nashville audience. “When I was going through a serious time in my life, there was one thing that I had to get rid of for my life to be okay again. So I wrote this song that’s a letter to that situation. It ended up being a No. 1 on the radio.”
Wallen further explains how the song is for everyone. “This is a song I feel a lot of you guys can relate to. Whether it’s a person, whether it’s a drink, a drug, whatever it is that’s got you feelin’ captive. It’s nice to let those chains go every once in a while. That’s what this song’s about.”
Swear it was like, I’ll be damned
I’m finally back to being who I am
When we were over, it was overnight
Light came on
It all felt right, when it all went wrong
The beginning of the chorus is a perfect example of the “everything happens for a reason” feeling, justifying a breakup. It details the feeling of returning to who you truly are and how it felt right when it all went wrong.
“I Got Better” Is For Anyone Looking to Move On
You turned me loose
Wasn’t no tellin’ who I’d turn into
But it turns out, me and you together’s why it took so long
‘Cause I got better since you got gone
Morgan Wallen’s message in “I Got Better” is a universal message that many people can relate to. It’s the kind of song that can hit you at that perfect moment in your life, when you need a message like this. The kind of song that makes you stop and rethink where you’re at in your own personal struggle. It doesn’t have to be a relationship necessarily; it’s what allows you to get better once you let go of what’s holding you back.
