The Meaning Behind “Oh Mother” by Sam Smith and the Gospel of Maternal Fury

Sam Smith has just dropped their latest single, “Oh Mother”. It’s both a celebration and a warning of the power of motherhood. This is Smith’s gospel of maternal fury, and it precedes the singer’s upcoming studio album, Hazel Eyes.

All the Tears My Mother Saved

Smith sings about a mother’s child enduring pain as an adult. The very thing a mother dedicates its existence to: avoiding pain, bumps, bruises, emotional and otherwise.

You remind me of my mother’s greatest fear.
Gave her life for my protection,
Through the years, from my tears.
Then you came along and tore it down,
With your deception, you let me drown.
And all the tears my mother saved,
Hit me like a wave.

Backed by The TwoCity Chorus, Smith explained in a press statement why they added a choir to the track. “The choir is meant to represent the fury of a mother witnessing her child’s betrayal—they’re summoning a sort of divine feminine energy.”

Oh, beware the woman scorned,
She would move a mountain for me.
Cross the driest desert for her child,
Like a hurricane, her pain would rip the roots out from the ground.

The hook offers retribution and reminds me of Johnny Cash singing “God’s Gonna Cut You Down”. And with Smith’s powerful voice reaching for the skies, it feels like they’re beckoning the wrath of Mother, Mother Nature, or some higher power, all at once.

And, oh, it hit me like a wave.

Boys Stay Boys

In the second verse, The TwoCity Choir voices Smith’s mother as Smith answers her, creating a call-and-response gospel tune that echoes Motown soul.

Baby, I know he cut you bad (Cut me deep),
You can run away, save what you had (I can’t run no more).
Maybe there’s a world where you can let him stay (No).
Boys stay boys, but men can change.

Desperate for their mother, Smith sings, “I cry for help, could you get here any faster?”
