The Meaning Behind Rosé’s Pop-Punk Empowerment Anthem “New Trick”

On her latest single, “New Trick”, Rosé is trying something new. Rather than simmer on the sad confessionals that make up the Blackpink singer’s 2024 self-titled solo debut, the 29-year-old pop star is picking up the pieces and moving on. And she’s doing so loudly. Very, very loudly with a high-energy pop-punk empowerment anthem.

Ka-Pow, B***h!

Over loud guitars and pounding drums, Rosé starts her anthem by picking herself up from a heartbreaking obsession. Instead of despair, she’s taking a new approach: kicking and rocking toward some kind of renewal.

Lovesick, I’ll pick my heart off the floor,
New trick, watch this, I’m kicking the door.
Get out, ka-pow, b***h, I know the cure,
New trick, watch this, watch this!

Rosé still dreams big, but she’s also aware of life’s fleeting moments. The cure for grief, it seems, is more joy. Better grab it before it vanishes.

Maybe I’m emotional,
I lay my dreams out on the table.
Love is unconditional,
Then disappears just like a rainbow.

No longer rigid or stuck in self-made limitations, she transforms a lazy night at home into a rager while also letting go of the past.

I can turn a staying in into a 6 a.m. night out,
I can turn a reminisce into “I don’t remember now.”

Something So Not Sad

“New Trick” came together during a busy time for the singer, which included her high-profile attendance, her third, at the 2026 Met Gala.

Written with Amy Allen and Andrew Wells, Rosé said of the track’s upbeat mood, “Ultimately, we successfully wrote something so not sad, and I think it is possibly the cutest thing we’ve ever made together… Maybe ‘Apt.’ is the cutest, but y’all can judge that for me!” (“Apt.” is Rosé’s 2024 smash collaboration with Bruno Mars, co-written by a staggering list of writers including Allen.)

Finally, “New Trick” recalls the punkish chants of The Go-Go’s. And perhaps newly emboldened, Rosé’s got the beat, too.
