The Meaning Behind “Swim” by BTS and Navigating Life’s Endless Tides

“Swim” is the first single from Arirang, the latest album from K-pop stars BTS.

The South Korean boy band described the song as a mirror of everyday life. “[We] hope it resonates with many people as they move through each day, taking each moment as it comes, splashing along and continuing to swim forward,” they said in a statement.

This Is How It All Begins

BTS’s English-language single describes the early stages of a romance. But it’s much deeper—pun cheaply intended—than that.

Swim, swim,
Water falling off your skin.

I could spend a lifetime watching you.

The opening verse finds the narrator struggling. BTS uses a deep-sea metaphor to explain how one navigates life’s seemingly endless abyss of turmoil.

Bad world, gone away and I still wake up in this mad world.
Name a place that I could breathe on this map, world.
Looking like a goody, goody in this bad world, bad world.
Don’t know how to act, girl,
I’m in the deep, tell me, where the hell you at, girl?

With the Moon and the Sharks

Often, briefly escaping anxiety is enough. Also, situated between the serenity of the moon’s light and the dangerous sharks below, remains the kind of balancing act many can relate to.

So easy, don’t make it so hard,
Nights like these, I just wanna get lost.
Right here with the moon and the sharks,
I ain’t gotta think ’bout a thing, baby, I just.

Finally, this is taking chances. Regardless of the unknown, the narrator risks the uncertainty of a new relationship, life, or the future tides they may face.

Take it off the ground, I ain’t never getting cold feet.

Sitting on the shore, now I’m ready for the whole sea.
