“The Fate Of Ophelia” opens Taylor Swift’s 2025 album, The Life Of A Showgirl. Recorded amid her conquering Eras Tour, Swift’s 12th studio release couldn’t have been more aptly named. The single mixes fairy tale with Swift’s fiction-like life. Then it absorbs power from a doomed noblewoman and recycles it into a danceable resurrection smash.

In “The Fate Of Ophelia”, Swift brings William Shakespeare’s old-world tragedy into modern times. She reimagines the tragic character Ophelia as one who escapes her dark fate.
I heard you calling on the megaphone,
You wanna see me all alone.
As legend has it, you are quite the pyro,
You light the match to watch it blow.
Ophelia drowns in a brook, but here, Swift survives the despair and falls in love.
And if you’d never come for me,
I might’ve drowned in the melancholy.
I swore my loyalty to me, myself, and I,
Right before you lit my sky up.
’Tis Locked Inside My Memory
The colossal success of Swift created a kind of prison of exclusivity. Meanwhile, her “prince,” or pro football tight end, saves her from Ophelia’s fate. Swift is resurrected, and “The Fate Of Ophelia” is both her love story and an empowerment anthem.
All that time,
I sat alone in my tower,
You were just honing your powers.
Now I can see it all.
Late one night,
You dug me out of my grave and,
Saved my heart from the fate of Ophelia.
Swift told BBC Radio 1 that she didn’t reread Hamlet, but for the bridge, she did “do a little brush up” as she paraphrased the play.
’Tis locked inside my memory,
And only you possess the key.
Few artists have been more prolific at documenting messy romances and failed relationships. Swift uses Shakespeare’s character as a larger metaphor for her own heartbreaks. They could have driven her mad. She could have—metaphorically—drowned in depression. But she didn’t. Instead, she married Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden.
And before the marriage scene, Swift documented her emotional survival in “The Fate Of Ophelia”.
