Taylor Swift‘s The Life Of A Showgirl was a massive global hit. Released on October 3, 2025, the album hit No. 1 in roughly 30 countries around the world shortly after. “The Fate Of Ophelia” was the lead single, released the same day as the album. Additionally, the lead single was a global hit, topping the charts in 38 countries. In the US, the single spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song was written by Taylor Swift, her producer Max Martin, and his frequent collaborator and producer Shellback. The name Ophelia comes from the Shakespeare play Hamlet. In the play, Ophelia is the love interest of Prince Hamlet. Ultimately, Prince Hamlet rejects Ophelia, and she descends into madness. Her life is controlled by the men around her, which leads to her insanity. Following her father’s murder by Prince Hamlet, she drowns in a brook. It’s a tragic story of how a beautiful noblewoman can descend into madness through heartbreak. Taylor Swift can easily relate to this with her own music career and her highly publicized breakups.
Taylor Swift Has Been Saved, Escaping the Fate
And if you’d never come for me
I might’ve drowned in the melancholy
The pre-chorus is a direct reference to Ophelia’s drowning and how Swift could’ve met the same demise. Swift’s previous breakups were highly publicized, and she was criticized as a result. But now the new love in Swift’s life has saved her life. It’s been said the lyrics are directly referencing her relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce. This is most evident in the chorus of the song.
Late one night, you dug me out of my grave and
Saved my heart from the fate of
Ophelia
The lyrics reiterate how Swift feels saved in the second verse as well. They were very direct with the lyrics on this song, which is a strong suit of Taylor Swift’s songs. It’s easily accessible and understandable, and very relatable to women. The 400-year-old story of Ophelia is relevant once again, becoming a modern-day smash hit.
The eldest daughter of a nobleman
Ophelia lived in fantasy
But love was a cold bed full of scorpions
The venom stole her sanity
And if you’d never come for me
I might’ve lingered in purgatory
You wrap around me like a chain, a crown, a vine
Pulling me into the fire
