The Meaning Behind “Beauty And A Beat” by Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj and a Futuristic Fairy Tale

“Beauty And A Beat”, the 2012 collaboration between Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj, has returned to the charts in 2026. Bieber’s Coachella performance gave the song a commercial rebirth, introducing a new generation to his third studio album, Believe.

When Believe arrived, Bieber was still a teenager. And “Beauty And A Beat” details young love with Minaj pushing the limits of the track’s Disney vibe.

Party Like It’s 3012

In “Beauty And A Beat”, Bieber is smitten by a girl and declares his feelings over an EDM beat created by German DJ and producer Zedd.

Show you off,
Tonight, I wanna show you off.
What you got,
A billion could’ve never bought
.

Bieber is optimistic about the future. He echoes Prince’s hit “1999”, though Prince was inspired by the anxiety many felt about the year 2000. But in Bieber’s deep future, the party’s raging and they’re still young, so forget about the world’s chaos.

We gonna party like it’s 3012 tonight,
I wanna show you all the finer things in life.
So just forget about the world, we young tonight,
I’m coming for ya, I’m coming for ya
.

Co-written with hitmaker Max Martin, the hook reimagines Disney’s reimagining of the old French fairy tale, “Beauty And The Beast”. And in Martin’s hands, the beat and the hook drive home a danceable romance track—replacing the princely beast with relentless EDM.

’Cause all I need,
Is a beauty and a beat,
Who can make my life complete
.

Gotta Keep an Eye Out for Selener

Minaj raps in the bridge with adult innuendo and a reference to Bieber’s then-girlfriend, Selena Gomez (for those who are familiar with Bieber’s personal life).

World tours, it’s mine,
Ten little letters on a big sign.
Justin Bieber, you know I’ma hit ’em with the ether.
Buns out, wiener,
But I gotta keep an eye out for Selener
.

But perhaps Bieber is right about the future. A decade and a half hasn’t dulled the impact of “Beauty And A Beat”. It’s a pop resurrection, like the fairy tale’s beast transforming back into a human prince.
