The Meaning of “Persona” by Charli XCX and Losing a Real Person Behind the Image

In “Persona”, Charli XCX describes both the power of image and how one can get lost behind it. Scraping guitars propel the track and echo Charli’s attempt to scratch beneath the surface of the façade, the ego, and the invented.

Who Knows What’s Real

One wonders if Charli is singing to herself on “Persona”. Perhaps this is Charlotte Aitchison addressing the hyperpop star Charli XCX.

Sometimes I wonder if you realize the way you come across,
It’s kind of crazy.
Wish you could be honest about your internal dialogue,
It wouldn’t faze me.

There’s a struggle here between the real and the implied—Charli the person and Charli the character. The pop star is confident, she parties, and she changes culture. It all looks fun, but the person behind the façade knows better.

You like the sound of your voice,
And I like the sound of mine.
Every day you’re suffering,
But you say you’re doing fine.
I love the stories you tell,
But I can tell when you lie.

At Arm’s Length

Of course, Charli could also be talking to a friend who’s lost in a fiction they’ve created.

Don’t f***ing choke on your ego when you see me coming,

So you try to hide it when you see me coming,
Don’t want to confront it, I’m scared I’m annoying.

Her friend becomes bitter when Charli points out the obvious. And friends tend to know each other better than most, which angers the ego because it has worked so hard to suppress what’s real.

I’d write you a letter, but you’d probably burn it.

Getting lost inside a persona reminds me of rogue AI. The persona makes you appear interesting and smart, and everyone wants a piece of you. Why remove the disguise now and return to just plain “you”?

I gotta say, I do respect the commitment to the bit,
Now that’s persona.
We’re both under the influence of life imitating art,
And we both know it.
