After releasing the critically acclaimed “Insomnia”, rock band The Moss released “The Place That Makes Me Happy” in 2023. Its upbeat sound, combined with lyrics about being in nature, makes it perfect road-trip music, especially for summer. Its video, filmed in Utah, perfectly captures its vibe.

Nature is a common theme throughout The Moss’ music—it’s even reflected in their name.

“The music is definitely inspired by the environment we’ve been in. The balance of nature is the most creative thing in the world,” frontman Tyke James said of Big Blue Moon. “How everything works together in such an intricate and detailed manner. Getting to a place where you’re either meditating, surfing or hiking, it’s easy to tap into that energy. The things that don’t matter then disappear. That happens with music as well.”

“The Place That Makes Me Happy” in particular is an ode to the great outdoors, with lyrics touching on the relaxing and restorative elements of nature. It opens with a trip to the mountains, away from modern life and conveniences.

I’ll pack the food if you pack the clothes
Gonna drive up into the mountain
‘Til we’re lost
Sh*t caffeine and a thing to boil water
Market’s closed so we’re havin’ wine for dinner.

The second verse touches on how nature can also be intimidating. Especially under the influence of drugs and when in a certain mindset.

I almost forgot the psychedelics on my dresser
You know I love gettin’ scared in the woods
Last time I swear I saw my own body decomposin’
And I felt so alone
But I don’t wanna go home.

In the final verse, the singer mentions other aspects of the place that make them unwilling to leave and return to everyday life.

Swimmin’ in the river, smokin’ bud on the bushes
Makin’ love underwater like a couple of fishes
And I don’t wanna go because I know the conditions
No, I don’t wanna go home
I don’t wanna go home.

The song also has a restless feeling to it, especially in the pre-chorus and chorus. No matter how happy the singer is in this place, they’re still chasing the high it gives them. And they are still searching for something better.

I will find somewhere
That makes me happier than here.
