In 2025, Sam Fender and Olivia Dean duetted on Fender’s “Rein Me In”, which, as of this week’s U.K. Singles Chart, has set the record as the longest-standing No. 1 in British music history.
The record-breaking song appears on Fender’s third studio album, People Watching. And it finds Fender and Dean offering two perspectives on romantic freedom.
I Let Go of Everything I Ever Had
Fender takes responsibility for ruining his relationship. He highlights a fight between the couple at a pub. Though he doesn’t reveal the details, it sets up how he’ll numb the pain with alcohol.
And I let go of everything I ever had,
’Cause I couldn’t give the love you deserved.
By The Gunner, you shouted, “Oh my God.”
It seemed churlish, but it’s what I was owed, I suppose.
Every flagstone of this town bears our prints,
And all the bars round here serve my ghosts and carcasses.
I wish I knew these things when I was young,
’Cause now I’ve just grown so numb.
He’s off the rails, and begs his friends, the bartenders, or anyone listening: don’t dare tighten the reins. If Fender isn’t smashed, then he feels the stinging heartbreak. So, just pour him another.
We take whatever we can to get the reason back,
So please don’t rein me in.
But Dean offers the girl’s perspective. She knows he needs help and he needs her. “So come on home,” she sings. And don’t place restrictions on her affection.
There’s nothing brave in walking alone,
Love in exile has nowhere to go, so come on home.
Don’t run away from my tenderness,
You’re so afraid of that heart inside of your chest.
We were doing so well, but you were scared to be held,
Took the easiest way out.
I see the tears of a man too proud to reach for a hand,
Well, let my love keep you safe now.
I’m Working Myself up to a Nice Warm Bliss
The chorus, in Fender’s voice, again begs for the freedom to be self-destructive. However, when Dean joins him, she’s asking for a different kind of slack. With her, he can just let go, instead of being shackled to misery. He may temporarily numb the pain, but that doesn’t make it go away.
Now I’m working myself up to a nice warm bliss,
All my memories of you ring like tinnitus.
If I stop, it’s just pain; please don’t rein me in.
