How Stevie Nicks Turned a Tough-Love Conversation With Her Parents Into One of Fleetwood Mac’s Most Beloved Hits

In 1974, Stevie Nicks and her parents had to have a tough conversation. She would spend the next six months focusing on her music, but if it didn’t work out, she would go back to school, and continue her education. Nicks did not take those six months for granted.

Following that conversation, Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham decided to take a trip up to Aspen, Colorado. It was there that they found themselves in a house overlooking the Aspen skyway. The house had a piano, and Nicks had her guitar. It was there, in that house, that Nicks wrote “Landslide,” setting the stage for the rest of her muscial career.

Three months after writing Landslide, Nicks got a call from Mick Fleetwood. It was New Year’s Eve, 1974. He asked Nicks and Buckingham to join Fleetwood Mac.

“I still had three months to go to beat my sixth month goal that my dad gave me,” Nicks said. She and Buckingham took Fleetwood up on that offer, and together, joined Fleetwood Mac.

Fleetwood Mac began as a blues‑rock band in 1967, when Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie founded the group. Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan joined soon after, shaping what became known as the Peter Green era. During this period, the band produced notable hits such as Albatross and Man of the World.

In 1970, Green left the band. Christine McVie, Danny Kirwan, and Bob Welch joined, marking the start of the band’s shift to Pop-Rock. They produced six additional albums.

In 1975, Nicks officially joined Fleetwood Mac. Through her on again off again romatic relationship with Buckingham, she produced several hits like “Landslide,” including “Dreams,” “Silver Springs,” and “Kind of Woman.”

Nicks brought a lot of success to Fleetwood Mac. Their 1977 album Rumors won Album Of The Year at the 1978 Grammy awards, and the Recording Acadamy later inducted it into the Grammy’s hall of fame in 2003. Fleetwood Mac, Nicks debut album with the band, also entered the Grammy’s hall of fame in 2016.

The Grammy Hall Of Fame was established in 1973, and sill serves as a hard to achive milestone for many artists.
