It’s no surprise that Jimi Hendrix is rated among the greatest guitar players of all time. But what is surprising is how Hendrix was only famous for roughly four years. In a short amount of time, Jimi Hendrix became an icon and left behind a legacy that has been difficult to beat for decades. He was doing more with guitar than was even thought possible in the 1960s. Many of the top rock guitarists of the 1970s and 1980s trace their influence back to Jimi Hendrix. The same was the case when grunge hit in the 1990s; bands such as Pearl Jam brought Hendrix’s blues-rock guitar swagger to the new genre.
Jimi Hendrix started teaching himself guitar at 15 years old. In the early 1960s, he enlisted in the army and was discharged after one year. As a result, Hendrix moved to Clarksville, TN, and then to Nashville shortly after. It was in Nashville that Hendrix joined The Isley Brothers’ backing band and performed on the Chitlin’ Circuit. He worked with Little Richard through 1965 and then with Curtis Knight And The Squires.
In 1966, Jimi Hendrix relocated to England. His manager became The Animals bassist Chas Chandler. Shortly after relocating, Hendrix formed The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The group was a trio, consisting of Mitch Mitchell on drums and Noel Redding on bass guitar. Their debut album was released on May 12, 1967, in the UK, and on August 23, 1967, in the US. What happened in between those release dates launched Hendrix in the US and made that debut album a massive success.
Jimi Hendrix Experience Found Success in the UK Before the US
The debut studio album from The Jimi Hendrix Experience was already a successful release in the UK. With the success of three singles, “Hey Joe,” “Purple Haze,” and “The Wind Cries Mary,” Hendrix earned a No. 2 on the UK Official Chart. The album was released in May, and by June, the band was ready to take their trio to the US. They appeared at the Monterey Pop Festival in California on June 18, 1967. This was America’s first real impression of the guitarist, and it became a legendary performance for the trio. Jimi Hendrix famously set fire to his guitar during this performance, which is one of the most iconic moments in rock history.
Following the success of their performance at the Monterey Pop Festival, their debut album was released in the US shortly after. Are You Experienced? peaked at No. 5 on the US Billboard Top LPs chart, and No. 10 on the US Top R&B Albums. Their second album, Axis: Bold As Love, was released only seven months after their debut. It peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Top LPs chart and No. 5 on the UK Official Chart.
Electric Ladyland was released on October 16, 1968, and hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top LPs chart. It’s The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s most commercially successful release, as well as their only No. 1 album. With three hit records within only one year, The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s dominance was unmatched at the time. They created and innovated rock music, adding soul and blues in ways not heard of before. Each member of the trio became a massive influence on the following decades of rock music. All of this in a short span of time. One year’s work inspired decades of hits.
