Weezer‘s 2014 album Everything Will Be Alright In The End served as the band’s return to their signature pop-rock sound. With that, Ric Ocasek of The Cars returned to produce the album. He had previously produced the band’s debut album in 1994, the Blue Album, and also the Green Album in 2001. Featured on the album is a duet with Best Coast singer, Bethany Consentino, called “Go Away.” At the time, the track didn’t get much notice when released as a single in 2014. Surprisingly, in 2026, the song received a resurgence of popularity that not even the band expected.
In early 2026, the song was used heavily on TikTok videos about relationships. The back-and-forth context of the duet is perfect for duets and edits on the app. Many took to the app using the song for this reason, and so much so that it entered the charts over a decade beyond its release. In March 2026, “Go Away” entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 90. This marked the band’s first entry on the chart since their famous cover of Toto’s “Africa” in 2018. “Go Away” peaked at No. 63 on the Hot 100 and reached No. 3 on the Alternative Airplay chart. Additionally, the song peaked at No. 13 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart.
Rivers Cuomo and Bethany Consentino Take Part in the Trend
Given the track’s resurgence of popularity, Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo and Bethan Consentino of Best Coast have joined in on the trend. Together, they’ve posted multiple videos of the two lip-syncing along to the 12-year-old track. Many have since used their videos, creating edits and duets, further popularizing the song on the app. This isn’t the first time the internet has created a resurgence of popularity for an old song. It’s happened time and time again, and most famously with Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.”
In a radio interview posted to TikTok, Rivers Cuomo discussed the viral trend with KROQ in Los Angeles. “Me and Bethany came up with this song in 2010. It ended up on a Weezer record in 2014, and nothing happened at that time. Years go by, and we’re about to release a new single, ‘Shine Again,” and this one (“Go Away”) just starts going crazy. Never could have predicted it, but it’s awesome.”
Cuomo went on to say, “Not only is it great that this one song has a new life, it just means in the future, who knows what could happen. Any song from our entire career could take off out of nowhere.” Rivers stated how he and the band were “utterly shocked” and said, “I think any of us would’ve bet any amount of money if you had said ‘Go Away’ was going to be a big hit.”
