Shane Boose, who performs under the sobriquet Sombr, can’t get over an ex in his hit “Undressed”. It became a breakout track for the singer, along with his 2024 single “Back To Friends”. He begins the gauzy pop tune by recounting the moment his partner fell out of love with him.
You Wanted Better
Boose notices that his girlfriend sees him as a burden. He was once like a cozy sweater, now so tattered and worn, it’s time to toss it out.
You had a dream, you wanted better,
You were sick of all the holes in your sweater.
You looked to me and wondered whether
I was the lamppost to which you were tethered.
She may pretend everything’s okay, but he can see she wants to leave.
I’m looking at you, and you’re looking at me,
But the glimmer in your eyes is saying you wanna leave.
You’re saying to me what you’re saying to me,
But the glimmer in your eyes is telling me other things.
So Boose must start all over again with someone else. And he’s not ready for the awkwardness of a new relationship. How do you move on when you’re not the one initiating the breakup?
I don’t wanna get undressed,
For a new person all over again.
I don’t wanna kiss someone else’s neck,
And have to pretend it’s yours instead.
Love Hurts
Then Boose describes the sting of seeing his ex with another man as he continues to wallow in grief.
I took the train to see my mother,
I look across the tracks to see you with another.
There’s nothing worse than seeing your lover,
Moving on while you still suffer.
As he further spirals, he imagines his ex-girlfriend starting a family with her new man. He won’t ever get over this girl with whom, it seems, he wants to spend the rest of his life.
Co-produced by Boose and Tony Berg, “Undressed” features the kind of infectious melancholy that defines the 21-year-old pop star’s gloomy stage name.
And I don’t wanna learn another scent,
I don’t want the children of another man
To have the eyes of the girl I won’t forget,
I won’t forget.
