“Pink Clouding” finds Taylor Swift swept up in the emotional rush of a new relationship. But it proves to be an illusion, and in the track, she apologizes for hurting someone she cares about. Instead of a he-done-me-wrong breakup anthem, Swift uses the language of people recovering from addictions to describe a rebound gone wrong.
“Pink Clouding” is one of four new tracks on the Encore edition of her 2025 album, The Life Of A Showgirl, which, at the time of its release, became the fastest-selling album in history.
I Was a Liar
We begin with the thrill of a new romantic entanglement. Everything’s pink and rosy here, or so Swift pretends. But she’s fooling herself.
Met the magenta sunrise,
Fuchsia forever intertwined.
Threw the rosewood on the fire,
Neither of us knew at the time
That I was a liar.
It feels good to be wanted. But she doesn’t feel the same toward him. So she’s making promises she won’t keep.
And it was so good,
Letting you want me, so good,
To make promises, promises, pr-pr-promises.
In the hook, Swift admits she was masquerading in the honeymoon phase. It was never going to last. She wonders how she’ll ever apologize for abandoning her partner—leaving him floating in a euphoria she never really felt.
Pink Cloud Syndrome describes a person new to recovery. The person gains early confidence amid waves of happiness that often crash into a hard reality. It’s a useful metaphor for Swift, as the emotional high masked the lingering pain from an old lover.
But I was pink clouding from the thrill of it,
Skydiving as you wrapped your arms around my body.
Gray rocking where the arrow hit,
Years later, I still wonder how to tell you sorry.
I Told You I Was Fine
Swift was coming out of a bitter breakup, which made for poor timing for the new guy. And their relationship was doomed from the start.
He cut me crimson, bled me dry,
He crossed my heart, I hoped to die.
Ripped all my orchids from the vine,
You met me at a cursed time.
I told you I was fine.
