The Dying Relationship Inside “Read My Mind” by The Killers

The Killers released “Read My Mind” as the third single from Sam’s Town, their sophomore album. Originally, it was a different song called “Little Angela,” with simpler lyrics about a love story, but producer Alan Moulder wasn’t happy with it and asked frontman Brandon Flowers to rework it.

Flowers has said he considers “Read My Mind” to be the best song he’s ever written and that it’s his favorite Killers song. He drew from his own personal experience for the lyrics, many of which are vague, with no clear connection to each other. But overall, it’s a song about the end of a relationship.

“I think just the description that lives in the song, it’s kind of – I wanted to focus on things that I think are kind of dying,” Flowers once said in an interview.

What Is “Read My Mind” About?

“Read My Mind” opens with a couple heading different directions in life and likely on the verge of breaking up.

On the corner of Main Street
Just tryna keep it in line
You say you wanna move on and
You say I’m fallin’ behind
Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?

As the song continues, Flowers sings about his desire to escape his small town and his big dreams, as well as the fight left in him to save the relationship.

I never really gave up on
Breakin’ out of this two-star town
I got the green light, I got a little fight
I’m gonna turn this thing around
Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?

The song also addresses the exciting feelings of being in a relationship and seeing and spending time with the person you’re falling for.

I pull up to the front of your driveway
With magic soakin’ my spine

Elsewhere, lines like “slippin’ in my faith until I fall” suggest pressing on through a struggle until failure comes, a failure which might be inevitable.

In the chorus, Flowers sings about the way they impact each other, suggesting that as long as she’s happy and thriving, so is he.

Oh well, I don’t mind if you don’t mind
‘Cause I don’t shine if you don’t shine

The repeated refrain of, “Can you read my mind?” speaks to how close—or not—they are. She may think she knows what he wants, but she might be completely wrong.
