The Meaning Behind “Don’t Look Back In Anger” by Oasis and Sound Advice From Noel Gallagher

Noel Gallagher once compared “Don’t Look Back In Anger” to “Hey Jude”, as both British ballads share an evolution far beyond their initial meanings. For Oasis, the song has become a kind of healing anthem. If you’ve watched Oasis perform live, you likely have sensed real catharsis inside a stadium of fans singing Noel’s words back at him. It’s not unlike what you’ll find at a Bruce Springsteen concert.

Though it’s very different now, let’s look at the song’s meaning on paper.

Behind the Lyrics

Noel narrates a song about someone looking back on their life with regret. They consider the things they haven’t done or the places they’ve never traveled. But Noel reminds them that it all goes away regardless.

Slip inside the eye of your mind,
Don’t you know you might find,
A better place to play?
You said that you’d never been,
But all the things that you’ve seen,
Will slowly fade away.

With a nod toward John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s 1969 bed-in for peace, Noel sings about idealism but also the simple experiences of daily life. This is his revolt against disappointment.

So I start a revolution from my bed,
’Cause you said the brains I had went to my head.
Step outside, summertime’s in bloom.
Stand up beside the fireplace,
Take that look from off your face,
You ain’t ever gonna burn my heart out.

“Who’s Sally?”

During a soundcheck at Sheffield Arena, Liam misheard a lyric that Noel sang. “Who’s Sally?” he asked. Noel had no idea what his brother was referring to. Liam thought Noel was singing, “So, Sally can wait.” Noel liked the line and changed it on the spot.

And so, Sally can wait,
She knows it’s too late as we’re walking on by.
Her soul slides away,
But don’t look back in anger, I heard you say.

Noel’s songs have always revealed the view from a dreamer. Here he writes about the absurdity of chasing life in a rock and roll band. It’s sound advice, but thankfully, he didn’t take it himself.

Please don’t put your life in the hands,
Of a rock ’n’ roll band,
Who’ll throw it all away.
