The Meaning Behind “Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star and One of the Best Sad Ballads of the 1990s

“Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star remains one of the best sad ballads of the 1990s. In many ways, the noir tune distills the decade’s gravitational pull toward melancholy.

Though the band never had another hit to match it, the dream pop of “Fade Into You” continues in artists like Lana Del Rey, Beach House, and many others. And it’s hard not to notice the dispassionate similarities between Del Ray and Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval.

Heartbreakingly detached and effortlessly cool, Sandoval’s plaintive songs arrived on the opposite end of an island in the 90s when most of the angst and pain was being delivered via screams and distorted guitars.

“Fade Into You” appears on the band’s second album, So Tonight That I Might See.

Shoegaze

Sandoval swings forlornly between want and despair. She wants to be close with a partner, vulnerable, secure. But she sees nothing in return. The other exists in darkness, and their solitude begins to cover Sandoval in heavy shadows.

Co-written with bandmate and producer David Roback, Sandoval sings “Fade Into You” in a kind of smoke-filled, country gloom. Here, she suggests the distance between her and her partner is so vast, they never noticed her moves.

In the slow waltz of the song, it’s like she’s been dancing with a ghost the whole time.

A Stranger’s Heart

This seems to be the end of the relationship. And perhaps that’s the most shocking thing about ending a romance, how quickly the intimacy becomes utter strangeness.

And then its smiles cover your heart.
