The Meaning Behind “Shoot The Bull” by Cody Johnson and Luke Combs

Cody Johnson has released his tenth studio album on June 26, 2026. The Banks Of The Trinity was released by Johnson’s own label, CoJo Music, along with Warner Music Nashville. It’s expected to perform well, just as Johnson’s previous releases have. His neo-traditional country approach is what sets Cody Johnson apart from other contemporary country artists. He blends elements of outlaw country and honky tonk into his classic style of country. A deep track on his latest releases features another top country artist. Track twelve is “Shoot The Bull” featuring Luke Combs. Though not released as a single, the song is racing up the charts on its own.

The expression “shoot the bull” refers to having an aimless and casual conversation. The song is about meeting up at a local honky tonk, having some drinks, and “shooting the bull.” It details escaping the pressure of fame to unwind in the local watering hole. It’s a traditional country theme that has been touched on, but remains relatable. Some days, you just want to forget about the world and have some drinks with good friends.

Hey, cowboy
You been throwing that rope, playing them shows, making Texas noise
Got country back on mainstream
Hey, mountain man
You been gone singing them songs with your wild-card band
Selling out every seat
Let’s slow down them highway wheels
Find a honky tonk to kill

Before his music career, Johnson rode bulls professionally in a rodeo. He references this in the opening lines, referring to himself as “cowboy.” Johnson also references how he got country back on mainstream, as his neo-traditional style of country has been successful for him. In the song, he’s looking to relax and take a break from stardom and fame.

Luke Combs Chimes In

The chorus is led by fellow country star Luke Combs, along with Johnson. They mention “silver bullets,” which is a direct reference to Coors Light Beer.

Let’s load up some silver bullets, saddle up some old barstools
Set our sights on 2 a.m. and let the rowdy cut loose
Forget all of our problems, take that corner quarter jukebox to school
Crank up a little possum and shoot the bull

The expression “crank up a little possum” refers to legendary country singer George Jones. “The possum” was a nickname given to Jones due to his facial features and late-night lifestyle, much like the nocturnal animal. Combs is stating that they should listen to classic honky tonk country, drink some beers, and chit-chat.

Cody Johnson and Luke Combs sing the second verse together, which contains multiple topics of discussion.

Man, tell me ’bout them gold-plated buckles and tattooed knuckles
Well, buddy, they’re about first place and family
And while we’re at it, tell me ’bout moonshine running
And big deer hunting up in Appalachia
You’d have to see it to believe
K
inda makes me want a drink

“Shoot The Bull” is a brand new country song that is sure to climb the charts in the coming weeks. Cody Johnson and Luke Combs both know what it takes to make a country hit. The two major modern country stars are guaranteed to make the song a classic soon enough.
