The Meaning Behind “Still” by Karol G and Bruno Mars and the Promise of Unconditional Love

Karol G and Bruno Mars come together on “Still”, a nostalgic English-language ballad about devoted love. The song appears on Karol G’s latest album, No Me Arrepiento De Sentir Tanto.

“Still” mines the drama of 1980s synth pop. And in it, the duo promises unconditional love to one another. Yet the dark synths are a reminder of the grief that often lurks behind best intentions.

What It’d Be Like Without You

Karol G sings a verse that sounds as though it was harmonically plucked straight from Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know”.

Don’t think I’ve ever felt like this,
Don’t think I’ve ever wanted someone like I want you.
My mind goes quiet in your bed,
But I can’t help picturing what it’d be like without you.
I hope it’s all just in my head, but, baby, if you ever left.

She’s in love and can’t help imagining the worst-case scenario of a breakup. This is panicking in the middle of the night.

I’d still sleep in your sweater,
Still feel you in the dark.
I’d still keep all your letters,
I won’t tear them apart.

In the second verse, Bruno Mars promises long-term commitment. But worry typically accompanies love. And love itself seems to produce desperation. One cannot live without the other. Couldn’t endure a life without this partner.

Don’t let your mind go places that it doesn’t need to.
You’re all I want, all I pray for,
And I’ll do whatever, girl, forever just to please you.

I’d Still Hope You Were Happy

Together, Karol G and Mars say they’d be happy for the other after a split. But it’s hard to predict the bitterness of a failed romance while you’re still in love.

However, the sentiment here is romantic bliss. And it sounds just as wistful as the track’s retro production.

I’d still hope you were happy,
Even though it’d be hard.

Even with a broken heart.
